in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. During this event, a special
international conference of IUFRO 9.05 group (policy, governance) will be
held, with as a topic "Assessing forest governance in a context of change".

Forest bioenergy is one of six thematic areas included in the IUFRO Strategy
2010-2014. In this context, I would like to draw your attention to the
High-level Research Conference "The Future Role of Bio-energy from Tree
Biomass in Europe" that will be held from 6 to 11 November 2011 in Vienna,
Austria.
The conference is organized by IUFRO in collaboration with the European
Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and the European Science
Foundation (ESF), the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry,
Environment and Water Management, and the Austrian Federal Research and
Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW). The new
IUFRO Task Force on Forest Bioenergy has played a key role in developing the
scientific programme of the conference.
In 2011, the International Year of the Forest, the conference will
contribute to understanding bio-energy drivers, options and impacts on
forest growing, management and production of traditional goods and services
in the future. The scientific programme will focus on
- Availability of biomass
- Biodiversity, landscape ecology and soil water quality
- Supply chain and system evaluation
- Forest biomass as feedstock for the energy and biorefinery sector
The Conference will feature lectures by invited high-level speakers, short
talks by young and early stage researchers, poster sessions and open

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
The next IUFRO All-Division5 Conference is to be held in Estoril, Lisbon,
July 8-13th 2012.
IUFRO, along with the Technical University of Lisbon/ ISA would like to
extend an invitation to the entire forest sector to participate in this
international event.
Forests play a vital role for rural as well as urban populations all over
the world. They are an essential natural resource providing multiple
benefits to people.
Their conservation and sustainable management are closely linked with global
issues such as food supply and environmental protection.
Scientific knowledge is needed all over the world to effectively address

in Nairobi, Kenya from 25 to 30 June 2012.
The first IUFRO regional congress in Africa will be held in partnership with

Parallel sessions are symposium of 2 hours that will include a maximum of 6

specific themes of the symposia are the following:
1. Modeling forest dynamics
2. Tools for forest management and inventory
3. Silviculture for multiple-use forest management, including timbers, NTFP,
PES
4. New FSC criteria and indicators
5. Silviculture of logged over and secondary forests
6. Managing tropical production and secondary forests for biodiversity
values
In addition to abstracts for the Plenary and Parallel sessions listed above,
participants are strongly encouraged to submit, symposium proposals on
additional topics related to tropical silviculture. Proposals should be a
one page presentation of the symposium rationale and objectives with the
names of the coordinator(s) of the session as well as the list of at least
4-5 oral presentations.

I am forwarding herewith an impressive article of Mr. Kanna Kumar, a
development professional of India with a forestry background who has
observed that conventional forestry curriculum needs to be revised so as to
incorporate community based conservation initiatives, particularly because
participatory forest management & rights of local communities are now a
commonly accepted principle worldwide. I shall be happy to know from you if
any of the institutions you are associated with have already done this or
are in the process of doing this, and if not whether you will be able to
facilitate the same.
