I am glad to share with you this announcement sent by Christophe Orazio (christophe.orazio(a)efi.int<mailto:christophe.orazio@efi.int>) who invites scientists from our Division 9 to join the proposed Task Force on planted forests that aims to continue the work of the Task Force on that theme that will finalize its work this year (https://www.iufro.org/science/task-forces/planted-forests/ ). Dr. Orazio sent the following description of the proposed Task Force, and invites all interested scientists to contact him:
Brief overview of the rationale, goals, and objectives of the proposed Task Force
The growth rate at which planted forests increase in area is expected to not only remain positive but strongly increase over the coming decades due to the role the UNFCCC Paris Agreement is foreseeing for forests as climate change mitigation tool. Thus, main driving forces are the renewed understanding of forest plantations being renewable mechanisms to create carbon sinks, an increasing demand for wood fibres, and established mechanisms to employ forest plantations for restoring degraded areas. Bio-refineries and popularity of wooden buildings might as well contribute to the expansion. Increasing the productivity of forest plantations up to maximum growth capacity levels while preserving their resilience to natural and anthropogenic disturbances such as forest fires will also push researchers to new monitoring recommendations and to the development of new silvicultural approaches, like precision management or species diversification. All these aspects justify the creation of a task force that operates coordinating an extensive network of researchers, well integrated and compromised with upcoming events sponsored by IUFRO (World Conference in 2019) and its expected outcomes. This task force is also in line with the conclusions of the fourth International Congress on Planted Forests[1]<https://mail.yahoo.com/d/search/name=Christophe%2520Orazio&emailAddresses=c…> (2018) and the setup of a new definition of plantation by FAO[2]<https://mail.yahoo.com/d/search/name=Christophe%2520Orazio&emailAddresses=c…> for the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020. The Congress noted that planted forests are still as important for wood production as for their protection function combining both in most cases. This evidence is yet not always perceived by society, so the task force aims to address some of the main challenges identified during the congress, and not addressed by the previous task forces:
1. Bring science-based evidence and support dialogue areas on how planted forest can serve societies providing multiple ecosystem services and social services
2. Demonstrate how such planted forest can contribute to bioeconomy and a carbon free future society
3. Propose and exchange of best management and genetic practices to improve the resilience of rural landscapes with planted forests

We are happy to inform you that the ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation (ICAR-IISWC) is organizing a two days National Seminar-Cum-Consultation-Workshop on “Revisiting Traditions and Culture (RTC-2019): Impacts on Environment, Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Natural Resources” during 14th and 15th June 2019 at ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun with the partial financial support from the United States India Educational Foundation (USIEF), New Delhi and the INTACH, New Delhi.
This Consultation workshop being unique and different from others attracts multi-stakeholders and sandwiches the abilities and traditional wisdom of local farmers-fishermen and scientific advancements to augment traditional knowledge and conservation of aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystems.
Around 100 participants including university professors, scientists, elected Panchayat representatives, civic activists, field functionaries of line Departments, and NGO professionals besides few research scholars and informant-farmers from Uttarakhand and other states are expected to participate in the seminar-cum-workshop. The participants will deliberate on various indigenous technical knowledge (ITK), and the impacts of traditions and culture on environment, aquatic ecosystems, and terrestrial biodiversity, especially on riverine fish harvesting, impacts of centuries-old community-based fishing festivals (mound), conservation of fish species and timru (Zanthoxylum armatum) through consultative discussion and arguments at the context of scientific and socio-cultural perspectives.
The facilitated participatory deliberations on the enriched syntheses of farmers’ and experts’ views, lessons and experiences shall bring out the status on traditional practices, actionable research areas, policy and development ideas forming way forward-recommendations, legal and policy frameworks to conserve the associated natural resources and promote responsible harvestings.
It is our pleasure to have your presence and deliberations during the seminar-cum workshop. Now, call for abstracts and discussion points are open.

3. Traditions of fishing and fishing festivals (mound) and their impacts
4. Technological options and legal and policy guidelines to manage, promote or contain tradition based influences.
Own experiences and wisdom based inputs besides the research outcome will benefit the program greatly.
Please articulate the observations and discuss the points in line with the context and themes of the program.
Looking for stories or observations pertained to the themes.
Also, simple counts, lists and discussion on the prevailing traditional practices of harvesting, natural resource management,.....that are having specific influences on resources, ecosystems,......Data needs on traditional knowledge and management issues...would also bring a much-needed consultation….please give a thought and participate....

proposal for a session. The conference program is designed to create a
community of engaged conference participants and bring together
sustainability lovers from all backgrounds to explore innovative forms of
theory, practice, and action that can help craft a path towards
sustainability.

There will be 12 awards for the best posters.
Sustainability is the core challenge of our era. We all have a role to play
in the path towards sustainability. This inaugural STPPA conference, in
collaboration with all who are committed to sustainability, seeks to bring
together academics and students across all disciplines, Aboriginal leaders
and scholars, business executives, civil society, policymakers,
sustainability professionals and other sustainability lovers to explore
innovative forms of theory, practice, and action that can help craft a path
towards sustainability.
The main theme of the conference is the integration across disciplines,
stakeholders, and sustainability pillars (such as social, environmental, and
economic). However, specialization is the key for successful integration.
Hence, both (integration and specialization) types of contributions are
welcome. We are looking forward to contributions from all stakeholders. The
contributions can be on any aspect of sustainability and/or any of the 17
Sustainable Development Goals.
The submission deadline for abstracts and session proposals is May 25, 2019.
