Dear Div6, Div9 colleagues, and readers of IUFRO News,
Forest Policy and Economics is calling for papers for the abovementioned special issue, which is guest edited by prof. Anne Toppinen, Dr. Dalia D'Amato and prof. Tobias Stern.
The main aim is to increase conceptual and empirical understanding of societal and environmental challenges, opportunities, trade-offs and the transition to a circular bioeconomy in the forest sector. Despite hosting a high degree of internal diversity, the circular and bioeconomy are distinct concepts employed to forward sustainability, and in particular to reconcile economic and environmental goals.

Dear Colleagues,
The aim of the European Cultural Heritage Year 2018 is to share our common
cultural heritage and its potential for identification, participation on and
development of European cultural, social, economic and other values. The
cultural heritage of the forests and in the forests tackles the multiple
interrelationships between forests, forest management and the human society,
which have changed in the course of history. It is not only confined to
demonstrating historical developments, but contributes also considerably to
a better understanding of the present situation of forests and the
development of the cultural landscape, and provides valuable input for
forest conservation and management policies. These potentials have only
partly been investigated till now. At present numerous initiatives,
collections and museums exist; however, they are often not adequately
linked. Thus, a new approach for co-operation of forest and woodland history
including traditional knowledge and forest and tourist enterprises is aimed
and an increasing need to deepen the knowledge related to the forest related
cultural heritage should be fulfilled.
I am happy to announce the Conference "European Forests - Our Cultural
heritage, which will take place from 4 to 7 December 2018 in 9313 St.
Georgen, Austria. It will be organized by IUFRO 9.03.01 Economic and Social
Forest history and IUFRO 9.03.02 Forest and Culture jointly with the
Austrian Forest Association/Working party Forest History and Institute of
Ethnology, Czech Academy of Sciences. All colleagues interested in the
history of forests and woodland and traditional knowledge related to
management and safeguarding of the cultural heritage are invited to attend
this conference. Papers and posters aiming the sharing and improvement of
knowledge concerning the cultural heritage of and in the forests and best
practices for including traditional knowledge into forest management are
welcomed. Please submit your abstracts (maximum 400 characters) to
elisabet.johann(a)aon.at <mailto:elisabet.johann@aon.at> June 30 2018. . The
scientific committee will transmit their decision by July 31 2018.
Proceedings will be published by the Institute of Ethnology, Czech Academy
of Science. More information is provided

TERRAenVISION Environmental Issues Today: Scientific Solutions for Societal Issues
Our Planet suffers from human activities. As scientists, we know more and more about our environment, about processes, rates of change, new threats and risks. However, the challenges seem to grow quicker than the solutions we can create.
This conference aims to focus on the scientific research towards finding solutions for the societal issues of our time. TERRAenVISION promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and networking. To bring scientists and stakeholders that have the same goal, work on the same societal issue, but have different scientific backgrounds. By bringing the people and their knowledge together, we may be able to take the steps towards solutions that can bring our society to a more sustainable situation. In this conference, we want to link to International policies such as the sustainable Development Goals, the UN Climate conventions, CAP and COP.
Environmental issues we would like to highlight and discuss:
This conference is framed around themes. Each theme is kicked off by two plenary keynote speeches of 20 min, followed by a discussion. After the plenary session, a range of different parallel sessions will be organised.
We also want to stress that the conference is not only for scientists, but also warmly would like to invite people from outside the scientific world.
The themes:
1. Climate change: Mitigation and Adaptation
2. Water Resources: Quality and Quantity
3. Land Degradation and Restoration
4. Nature based solutions
5. Fire in the earth system, effects and prevention
6. Ecosystem services and Health
7. Science interface: with policy and public
