Background and objectives
Due to emerging cross-sectoral policy impacts on forests and environment, the forestry sector alone cannot achieve sustainable forest management. Policies in related areas such as agriculture, energy, climate changes, biodiversity, water and tourism heavily affect framework conditions for forests and the environment. At the same time, global trends such as increased demand for energy and raw materials, trade liberalization and the diversification of demand for forest goods and services, have enhanced reciprocal reflections - goods and services from trees and forests become increasingly important and demanded by other sectors. With the objective to focus on the linkages and interdependencies of changes in forest land use but also to contribute to international scientific dialogue on how to engage with other sectors so as to better coordinate and harmonize policies, especially in areas of conflicting priorities, IUFRO Unit 9.05.03 (Cross-sectoral policy impacts on forests and environment) was established in 2012. The first international Symposium of IUFRO Unit 9.05.03 was organized in Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina), November 28th – 29th, 2013, gathering scientists interested in cross-sectoral policy impacts on forests and environment. The thematic topic of this event was focused on perception of professionals from different sectors towards forest governance. This event encouraged cross-disciplinary research in forestry and environmental sciences and strengthens the importance of policy and social sciences in forestry.
IUFRO unit 4.05.00 was founded in 1981, with its first meeting in 1985 in Brno, Czech Republic, with a theme of ‘Current Problems of Managerial Economics in Forestry’. The Unit concentrates on the economic and accounting aspects of management of different types of forest enterprises, specifically small-scale enterprises. The Unit deals with the economic analyses of forest enterprises, principles and techniques of accounting relevant to forest enterprises, fundaments of decision-making, and the economic and accounting tools for planning, supervising, measuring, controlling, and evaluating the status and performance of forest enterprises. The main objective of IUFRO Unit 4.05.00 is to promote international cooperation in forestry research related to managerial economics and managerial, social, and environmental accounting. The Unit is organized around three topics: 1) Multifunctionality – including analysis of wood and non-wood supply and demand and integration of ecosystem services, 2) Evolving context – including the changes and their consequences as well as the expected changes and their consequences, and 3) Uncertainty and Risk.
The conference theme, “Cross-sectoral policy impacts on managerial economics and accounting in forestry” aims to examine linkages between the policy and economic components of forest resources and associated values. Specifically, the conference will address the influence of policy decisions on economic returns to forest management, the role that forest accounting plays in assessing policy implementation and outcomes, and how forest accounting and economics can provide information for policy deliberations. Focus areas include:
• Economic assessment of the effects of environmental and political changes on forest management
• Economic and environmental assessment of forest- and trade-related policies
• Opportunities and challenges of policies related to payments for ecosystem services and consequences for forest management
• The role of decision support systems in adaptation to shifting legal and institutional framework conditions
• Other sectors impacts on environment and forest sustainability under changing framework conditions
• Institutional (regulations, policies, behaviours etc.) and economic instruments addressing emerging societal needs from forest ecosystems
• Forest development and management in the light of global change
• Social and cultural aspects of managerial and economic opportunities and challenges connected with forest ecosystem
• Governance of cross-sectoral forest policy impacts: the role of economics and accounting systems.

Symposium venue and accommodation
The Symposium will take place in hotel Hollywood http://www.hotel-hollywood.ba/2/index.php/en/ in Sarajevo, the capitol of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The hotel provides an excellent conference venue with high quality conference rooms and facilities, excellent accommodation and food. Cost per participant is 78 Euros per day for a single room. This includes: accommodation, all meals (one drink per meal included) and coffee breaks, free Wi-Fi connection and the use of leisure facilities. The Sarajevo Airport is only 10 minutes away and transfer to/from the hotel is easily arranged. The down town of Sarajevo is easily accessible by public transport (tram station can be found within a few minutes’ walk) or taxi, for those interesting to explore historical and cultural features of Sarajevo.

Field trip
After the Symposium, a one-day field trip will be organized to visit southern part of the country (Herzegovina) and discover beautiful medieval city of Mostar with its historical bridge and down town. Detailed programme of the field trip will be provided in time. Cost is 84 Euros per participant and includes: bus transfer from/to the hotel, tourist guide, all meals and refreshments. The participants are kindly invited to book their place for the field trip directly to the hotel via hotel web page. Please clearly separate accommodation booking and field trip booking. The deadline for field trip booking is April 10th, 2015.
Registration
Registration fees will be 60 Euros and will be paid in cash at the registration desk. It includes official dinner (Monday, May 4th) and Proceedings of extended abstracts. However, the participants are requested to fill in and send the registration form not later than April 1st, 2015, to help organizers to finalize the program of the Symposium. Abstracts, presentations and publications
Participants wishing to present a paper at the Symposium are required to submit an extended abstract (maximum 3 pages) no later than the deadline specified below (March 1st, 2015). The abstracts should include: title, author(s) name, institution and contact details (including email address) and keywords. The abstract should be in doc or docx format. Acceptance will be based on the relevance to the topics of the Symposium. The Proceedings of extended abstracts will be available as a part of the Symposium package. The Program Committee is considering possibilities to select some high quality papers and published them in a special issue of SEEFOR http://www.seefor.eu/ or other peer-reviewed journals. There will be no poster session. Presentations at the Symposium will be organized into thematic sessions. Each session will have a chair person, who will introduce the presenters, control presentation time and lead the discussion after the presentations. Presentation time is 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of discussions. Please avoid using complicated presentation techniques as they might be incompatible with available presentation software. Please bring your presentation with you and give it to the desk registration personnel to let them to upload it in time.

IUFRO Task Forces are established on a temporary basis to advance inter-disciplinary cooperation in inter-divisional forest research fields. Their focus is on emerging key issues that are of strong interests to policy makers and groups inside and outside the forest sector, and contribute to international processes and activities.
During the IUFRO Board Meeting held in Salt Lake City in October 2014, a number of Principles were agreed upon as a basis for the establishment of Task Forces during the current IUFRO term. In the view of the IUFRO Management Committee, the number of Task Forces to be convened during a given year may be up to ten, but in order to encourage activities across the full spectrum of IUFRO's disciplinary expertise, shorter-term, more tightly focused Task Forces are encouraged. This will enable IUFRO to establish new Task Forces on a periodic basis throughout the 2015-2019 Term to take advantage of emerging needs and opportunities.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Proposals for new Task Forces will be evaluated by the Management Committee based on the following criteria:
• Contribution to implementation of the IUFRO Strategy 2015-2019;
• Potential to strengthen cross-Divisional interaction on specific topics of global relevance related to one or more Emphasis Areas and/or Institutional Goals of the IUFRO Strategy 2015-2019 (for details see <http://www.iufro.org/discover/strategy/#c10578> http://www.iufro.org/discover/strategy/#c10578)
• Engagement of two or more Divisions by specifically involving relevant Divisional units (Research Groups and/or Working Parties) - proposal should be jointly developed with the relevant IUFRO Divisions and their units, but may involve additional experts currently outside of the IUFRO network and partner institutions, as required. Task Force activities should not undercut current work within IUFRO Divisions, but rather complement and expand their activities;
• Specific contribution of the proposed Task Force to addressing broader policy processes or interdisciplinary science-policy initiatives; e.g., Future Earth (1) , Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), etc.;
• In case partner institutions are involved, brief justification for their involvement;
• Clarity of timelines for proposed Task Force activities and their deliverables; while Task Forces can be proposed for up to the full length of the current IUFRO term (until the 2019 World Congress in Brazil), it is highly recommended that proposed Task Forces consider more focused activities to be undertaken over a much shorter time period (i.e., 1-2 years);
• Selection of Task Force members in a way that they reflect required scientific expertise, diversity, balance between North/South, natural and social sciences, and gender;
• Clarity of operational aspects (roles and responsibilities of Task Force coordinator and members, roles and responsibilities of partners involved, if any), budget for activities and funding sources.
Proposals are now being accepted for new Task Forces that would begin their work in early 2015. Please refer to the format (outlined below) when preparing your proposals. The deadline for submission of proposals is January 15th, 2015. All proposals will be reviewed by the Vice-President for Task Forces in consultation with other members of the IUFRO Management Committee and the Coordinators of IUFRO Divisions relevant to each proposal. Decisions on the establishment of new Task Forces will be made and communicated to the proposed Task Force coordinators by the end of February. The coordinators of new Task Forces will be invited to participate in the upcoming IUFRO Board meeting to be held in Vienna from April 15-17, 2015.
FORMAT FOR TASK FORCE PROPOSALS
Note: Proposals should include the following as concisely as possible, within 3-5 pages.
• Name of proposed Task Force
• Name of proposed Task Force coordinator, affiliation (including IUFRO position) and contact information
• Names of proposed Task Force members, their affiliations (including IUFRO positions) and contact information
Brief overview of the rationale, goals, and objectives of the proposed Task Force (1 paragraph)
• Description of specific proposed Task Force activities, deliverables and timelines. This should include planned focused meetings with tangible outputs such as 'state-of-knowledge' reviews, journal papers, dedicated volumes, etc.
• Budget table listing major activities and funding sources, if known – indicate if these funds are already secured.
• Narrative addressing the following:
- Contribution to implementation of the IUFRO 2015-2019 Strategy;
- How the proposed Task Force will strengthen cross-Divisional interaction on specified topics related to IUFRO 2015-2019 Strategy's Emphasis Areas and/or Institutional Goals , and how the Task Force will complement and/or expand activities of existing IUFRO Divisional units;
- Specific contribution of the proposed Task Force to addressing broader policy processes or interdisciplinary science-policy initiatives.
