The planning team has put together five fascinating field educational sessions. Traverse City is one of America’s outdoor recreation wonderlands. It’s a small town with all the amenities and culture of a larger city. Field Educational Sessions
TART Trail Bicycle System
The Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails is offering a session on regional trail development designed to explore how public-private partnerships can be developed to help initiate, maintain and expand non-motorized infrastructure designed to meet the economic, recreation, transportation, health and social needs of the community. Participants will learn about how unique partnerships have leveraged money and manpower to develop and maintain over 60 miles of trail in the region. The session will feature a leisurely 15-mile bicycle ride on the trails through Traverse City and stop at locations along the way.
Old Mission Peninsula - A national coordinated land use success story!
The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy will be hosting a trip focusing on the multiple benefits (social, economic, cultural etc.) of a coordinated land use protection strategy on the beautiful Old Mission Peninsula in Grand Traverse Bay. This tour will showcase the on the local, regional and indeed national impacts of this effort and touch on areas of the township dedicated to fruit production, environmental protection, passive and active recreation, and the growth of the wine industry and associated tourism.
A River Reborn: Building a Prosperous Community through Dam Removal and Ecological Restoration
Join the Grand Traverse Conservation District for an exploration of the Boardman River Dam Removal Process. Participants will board a bus at the Park Place Hotel to travel to the Boardman River Nature Center where they will receive a multi-media presentation on the largest dam removal project in Michigan History. The session will include an examination of the unique, multi-sector collaborative process that was used to build community investment, raise over $4.5 million and manage the first of three dam removal projects to successful completion—on time, and on budget. The session will conclude with a ~3 mile flat-water paddle from the Nature Center to Traverse City proper, within a short walk of the Park Place hotel. Canoes, paddles and life preservers will be provided
Michigan Partnerships Gone Wild
Program demonstrations of DNR’s Recreation 101: Great Lakes Fishing in the West Grand Traverse Bay paired with “Catch & Cook” and “Gourmet Gone Wild” sessions including a chef-prepared meal, and finishing with DNR partnerships with the Michigan Grape and Wine Council and Michigan Culinary Alliance.
Pathways to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore & the new Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail
Superintendent Dusty Shultz and Deputy Tom Ulrich will provide a behind the scenes orientation to the park. We will go into the park to experience the spectacular scenery and learn about the globally significant perched dune landscape, past and present recreational uses, and efforts to balance public access with protecting natural and cultural resources. Participants will have an option to bike the new Heritage Trail with NPS planner Barbara Jameson. We will learn about the history behind the Crystal River acquisition and working with local and national land trust to protect its ecologically important natural lands and resources.

Dear IUFRO Officeholder, dear Colleagues,
The Congress Scientific Committee invites submission of session proposals for the 2014 IUFRO Congress. In keeping with the spirit of the Congress title – Sustaining Forests, Sustaining People: The Role of Research – the Congress Scientific Committee is developing a program that will highlight the contributions that forest science is making to address the significant environmental, social and economic challenges facing our world. The Congress program will reflect the forest science community's diverse contributions across the full range of natural and social science disciplines, with special emphasis on key issues and research areas identified in IUFRO's 2010-2014 Strategy.
Session proposals will be accepted that address one or more of the following Congress themes:
- Forests for People
- Forest Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
- Forests and Climate Change
- Forest and Water Interactions
- Forest Biomass and Bioenergy
- Forests and Forest Products for a Greener Future
- Forest Health in a Changing World
Who may submit a session proposal?
All who share an interest in the future of forests and forest science session are invited to submit session proposals. We encourage proposals that involve collaboration between two or more IUFRO Divisions or Task Forces and/or with organizations not formally associated with IUFRO, and from university students at all levels. We strongly recommend IUFRO officeholders and others actively involved in IUFRO Research Groups, Working Parties, and Task Forces communicate with their respective Division representatives on the CSC (or Task Force coordinators) before submitting proposals – this will greatly facilitate broader involvement of IUFRO divisional units and Task Forces in the scientific program and avoid overlaps among sessions.
Session proposals from non-IUFRO member organizations are encouraged although preference will be given to those that are prepared jointly with IUFRO Divisional units and Task Forces (see http://www.iufro.org/science/<http://www.iufro.org/typo3conf/ext/tcdirectmail/web/click.php?l=3&t=html&c=…> for more information) – if assistance is needed to identify appropriate partners within IUFRO, please contact the CSC Chair or other members of the CSC.
Preparing and submitting a session proposal.
Proposals should be submitted between January and April, 2013, online at www.iufro2014.com<http://www.iufro.org/typo3conf/ext/tcdirectmail/web/click.php?l=0&t=html&c=…> using the Session Proposal Form. Proposals will not be accepted after April 30th.
In addition to providing basic information on session organizer(s), session title, alignment with Congress themes, and a short abstract of the session proposal, those submitting proposals should submit (online) a more complete proposal (as a Word document) that describes the session objectives and content in relation to Congress theme(s), proposed session format (i.e., presentation of individual papers and/or posters, moderated panel discussion, or other forms of presentation) and lists proposed speakers (if known), their organizational affiliations and tentative titles of their presentations. Proposed sessions should be organized to be 2-21Ž2 hours in length. For sessions involving oral presentations, we recommend that each speaker be given a minimum of 15 minutes for his/her presentation.
Please note that the abstract submission process will be open to all, so session organizers may need to include papers or posters that were not originally proposed for their sessions. Please be aware of this possibility and the need for flexibility in designing your session. In the event that the number of accepted abstracts for a particular session exceeds the number that can be accommodated in a single session, organizers may be given an additional session slot in the Congress program.
Criteria for selection.
Session proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by members of the Congress Scientific Committee with primary consideration given to their scientific quality and relevance to the Congress themes. Other factors that will be considered are: the involvement of two or more IUFRO units (Divisions, Task Forces, Research Groups and Working Parties) and/or non-IUFRO organizations; [geographic and gender] diversity of proposed session speakers/presenters; and the involvement of students and young scientists. Proposals will be evaluated as they are received, so we strongly encourage submissions well in advance of the April 30th deadline.
Acceptance decisions will be made no later than June 30th, 2013. An open Call for Abstracts will be issued in July, with online abstract submission until October 15th and acceptance decisions until November 30th (2013).
Responsibilities of session organizers.
Session organizers of accepted proposals are expected to communicate with prospective presenters regarding submission of abstracts (online, from late July to mid-October 2013), and will be asked to review abstracts submitted for their sessions during the abstract review period (i.e., in late October to late November 2013). Session organizers may be asked to assist the CSC in the editing of accepted abstracts. They will also be responsible for moderating sessions (or assigning session moderation responsibilities) and are encouraged to pursue publication options for papers presented in their sessions.
Abstracts of papers and posters presented during the Congress will be published in a special volume of The International Forestry Review, as was done for the 2010 Congress in Seoul, Republic of Korea. As formal Congress proceedings with full papers will not be published, session organizers should explore alternative publication options (books, special issues of journals, etc.) for their sessions.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is inviting experts to take part in a second round of comments on the Working Group II contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report that starts on Thursday, 28 March. For the second round of expert reviews, Working Group II, which covers climate change impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability, is seeking input from volunteer expert reviewers from all relevant fields. The second order draft of the contribution will also be reviewed by the member governments of the IPCC. The review period runs until 24 May. Registration for participation in the review is now open.
The IPCC seeks the widest possible participation by experts in the reviews of its draft reports. Reviewers should reflect the full range of scientific, technical, and socio-economic views, expertise, and geographical representation.
In order to arrive at a balanced assessment, Working Group II hopes to draw on the expertise of climate scientists as well as others with the knowledge or experience to provide scientific review comments on climate change impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability.
The main stages of the review process are the review of the first order draft by scientific experts, the review of the second order draft by experts and governments, and a final round of government comments on the draft of the Summary for Policymakers.
During the review of the first order draft of its contribution to AR5, Working Group II received more than 19,000 comments from 563 reviewers from 60 countries. Independent review editors ensure that every review comment is addressed by the authors of the report chapters. To ensure transparency, all the comments and the responses from the authors are published with the drafts after the reports are released.
Individuals who have already registered for the review of the first order draft are automatically registered for the review of the second order draft. They can use the login credentials provided for the earlier review. Experts who have not previously registered may secure access to the reviewing system based on an email request to tsu(a)ipcc-wg2.gov .

This book links the emerging concepts of complexity, complex adaptive system (CAS) and resilience to forest ecology and management. It explores how these concepts can be applied in various forest biomes of the world with their different ecological, economic and social settings, and history. Individual chapters stress different elements of these concepts based on the specific setting and expertise of the authors. Regions and authors have been selected to cover a diversity of viewpoints and emphases, from silviculture and natural forests to forest restoration, and from boreal to tropical forests.
The chapters show that there is no single generally applicable approach to forest management that applies to all settings. The first set of chapters provides a global overview of how complexity, CAS and resilience theory can benefit researchers who study forest ecosystems. A second set of chapters provides guidance for managers in understanding how these concepts can help them to facilitate forest ecosystem change and renewal (adapt or self-organize) in the face of global change while still delivering the goods and services desired by humans. The book takes a broad approach by covering a variety of forest biomes and the full range of management goals from timber production to forest restoration to promote the maintenance of biodiversity, quality of water, or carbon storage.

"Sustaining the Future of Acacia Plantation Forestry"

This is a joint conference of the recently formed IUFRO Working Party WP 2.08.07 on Acacia Genetics and Silviculture, WP1.02.06 on Ecology and Silviculture of Acacia and WP 2.04.01 on Population, Ecological and Conservation Genetics and will be hosted by the Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences (VAFS). The conference will include invited and contributed presentations and posters, discussion sessions, satellite and business meetings, and in-conference and post-conference tours.
This 4 days' conference with the theme, "Sustaining the Future of Acacia Plantation Forestry" will be structured so as to promote discussion between geneticists, breeders and scientists concerned with management regime development and interactions of the crop with its biotic and abiotic environment. This broad ranging review should provide scientific support to those responsible for developing and implementing forest plantation management policies. While our primary interest is in tropical acacias we recognize that there is a much more established tradition of planting temperate species such as A. mearnsii, and we will welcome contributions from scientists working on those crops.

Student Conference Scholarships
Motivated and accomplished students enrolled full-time in an outdoor recreation management, planning, or closely-related degree program are encouraged to apply.
Up to at eight student scholarships will be awarded for the 2013 National Outdoor Recreation Conference. At least half of the scholarships awarded will be to qualified students from within the surrounding region. A scholarship valued at $785 will be awarded to cover lodging, conference registration, and one-year student membership to SORP. Included in this total is a $250 check to be used for travel expenses. All scholarship recipients are expected to attend the full four-day conference.
The deadline for student conference scholarship applications is February 15, 2013.
