The Policy Brief is launched at a side-event titled "Vienna Call for Action: The power of forest-based bioeconomy", which is a follow-up to the Global Summit <a href="http://url8074.news.iufro.org/ls/click?upn=u001.C6oMVBOd8j-2B22go-2BVoSNM8Y…><u>Advancing Sustainable Forest-based Bioeconomy Approaches</u></a>, held in Vienna, Austria, in February 2026.<br /><br />In recent years, the urgency of addressing interconnected global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, resource insecurity, and growing socio-economic inequalities has become increasingly evident. These pressures are further intensified by often inefficient production and consumption patterns. Consequently, there is a need for transformation to balance economic development with environmental and biodiversity goals and social well-being.<br /><br />A forest-based bioeconomy offers a powerful pathway to address these challenges. It goes beyond wood products and bioenergy, encompassing the full range of forest types, their goods and ecosystem services. Sustainably managed forests can provide renewable materials, bioenergy, and other ecosystem services while supporting livelihoods, strengthening rural economies, and contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation.<br /><br />These opportunities are already visible in practice across different regions. From mass timber buildings in cities like Singapore and Amsterdam to national programmes supporting timber construction in Europe, the use of wood supported by strong sustainability safeguards is increasing as a low-carbon alternative in the built environment. At the same time, value chains based on non-wood forest products, such as baobab in Africa or açaí in the Amazon, show how forests can generate income and innovation, while also requiring strong sustainability safeguards. These examples highlight that successful forest-based bioeconomy pathways depend on context-specific solutions, strong governance, and inclusive value chains.<br /><br />As IUFRO President <i>Professor</i> <i>Daniela Kleinschmit</i> notes, "When grounded in principles of sustainability, equity, and resilience, forest-based bioeconomy strategies can play a central role in advancing circular economies and delivering on multiple global commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement, and the Global Biodiversity Framework among others." <br /><br />Global demand for wood and bio-based materials is expected to continue rising, driven by population growth, urbanization and the transition away from fossil-based resources. Overall material use has more than tripled over the past 50 years and could increase by a further 60% by 2060. Biomass currently supplies roughly a quarter of global material needs. <p>The year 2025 started with the launch of the new IUFRO website. This comprehensive update marks a significant step forward in supporting forest science and fostering global collaboration across the IUFRO network.<br /><br />This collaboration happens mainly in IUFRO's thematic structure. While the nine Divisions - permanent thematic units with their Research Groups and Working Parties - and one Task Force from the previous term continued to focus on their core topics, twelve new Task Forces addressing emerging cross-cutting issues started their work in pursuit of their goals through to the next IUFRO World Congress in 2029 in Nairobi, Kenya. Many of the network activities around the world are highlighted in this Annual Report.<br /><br />The first year after an IUFRO World Congress is also the first full year of a new IUFRO Board, which traditionally meets in Vienna, Austria, where the IUFRO Headquarter is located. <br /><br />At the Vienna Board meeting in May the Guiding Principles of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion were approved. These are vital to the global science community and fundamental to IUFRO's overall mission of advancing forest science for the benefit of all. <br /><br />The Board also officially approved the formation of a new Mentorship Committee, a forward-looking initiative designed to promote professional growth. <br /><br />Furthermore, the Board approved the new Regional Science-Policy Information Networks (SPIN), an activity which follows the Directors' Forum and aims to enhance collaboration between heads of institutions and research organizations and policy actors in regions. The first two regional networks were established in Africa and Europe.<br /><br />In June the IUFRO Science-Policy Programme (SciPol) presented its global assessment on Forests for Social and Economic Resilience and the related policy brief. <br /><br />And in September, a key highlight of the IUFRO Special Programme for Development of Capacities (IUFRO-SPDC) was a three-day workshop back-to-back with the 5th World Teak Conference in India, where early-career scientists learned about how science can best contribute to the restoration of degraded forest landscapes.</p>

We continue the Season with the <a href="http://url8074.news.iufro.org/ls/click?upn=u001.C6oMVBOd8j-2B22go-2BVoSNM8X…><u>Task Force on Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Forest-Related Sectors</u></a> - ForGEDI.<br /><br />Host <i>Gerda Wolfrum</i> from IUFRO Headquarters and co-host <i>Bashir Isiya, </i>Nigeria, from the International Forestry Students' Association (IFSA), spoke with Task Force co-leads <i>Todora Rogelja</i> from the University of Padova, Italy, and <i>Rattiya Lippe</i> from the Thuenen Institute of Forestry, Germany. <br /><br />The conversation highlighted <strong>entrenched power and governance structures</strong> that determine who is excluded from participation and denied rights, including access to forest resources. Globally, there are many examples of women, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, youth, and other groups that have managed forests well yet remain underrepresented in decision-making. <br /><br /><i>"Without including the perspectives of those who directly depend on the forest and who nurture the forest the most, policy decisions are incomplete and often ineffective and reinforce already existing inequalities,"</i><strong> </strong>said <i><strong>Todora Rogelja</strong></i>.<br /><br />There are also many success stories about how GEDI can be integrated into forest-related decision making. <i><strong>Rattiya Lippe</strong></i> refers to a book titled <a href="http://url8074.news.iufro.org/ls/click?upn=u001.C6oMVBOd8j-2B22go-2BVoSNMxU…><u>Women as stewards of forests</u></a> (Tropenbos International, Tropical Forest Issues, edited by Todora Rogelja and Luca Kroese). She highlights the story of an Indonesian woman called <i>Westhi Wigaringtyas</i> or <i>Wiga</i> who helped to significantly increase women's participation in decision making and forest management. <br /><br />In the end, as <i><strong>Rattiya</strong></i> put it, "<i>advancing gender equity, diversity and inclusion is not just about inviting more people to the table or representing diversity symbolically. Dear All,
Join the global forest health research community in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, from August 9-13, 2027, for the IUFRO conference hosted by Division 7 - Forest Health under the theme "Global Partnerships and Sustainability." We welcome the participation of units from other IUFRO Divisions to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration under the conference theme.
This international conference will bring together researchers from around the world who are dedicated to advancing the understanding and stewardship of healthy forest ecosystems. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their research, exchange ideas, and build meaningful collaborations across all IUFRO divisions. We especially emphasize the importance of global and community partnerships in advancing sustainable forest management, and invite all perspectives, including Indigenous knowledge systems and research approaches.
With a strong focus on forest health, the conference will feature sessions on forest insects and pathogens, invasive species, pest management, and forest damage assessment. Researchers working in complementary fields, including silviculture, forest genetics, and biodiversity, are warmly invited to contribute to this dynamic and interdisciplinary scientific program. In line with the conference theme, contributions that explore sustainability through cross-disciplinary collaboration are welcome. We hope that you are able to join us in Edmonton in 2027.
