XXVI IUFRO World Congress: REMINDER - CALL FOR SESSION PROPOSALS
Deadline for proposals: 13 October 2022
The Congress Scientific Committee invites submission of session proposals for the 2024 IUFRO World Congress. In line with the spirit of the Congress title – Forest and Society towards 2050 ‐ the Congress Scientific Committee is developing a program that will highlight the forest contributions to the UN 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development goals and beyond. The Congress program will reflect the forest science community’s diverse contributions across the full range of natural and social science disciplines, with special emphasis on the themes and subthemes available at the Congress website (https://iufro2024.com/)
Who may submit a session proposal?
All who share an interest in the future of forests and forest-related science are invited to submit session proposals. We encourage proposals that involve collaboration between two or more IUFRO Divisions or Task Forces and/or with organizations not formally associated with IUFRO, and from university students at all levels. We strongly recommend IUFRO officeholders and others actively involved in IUFRO Research Groups, Working Parties, and Task Forces communicate with their respective Division representatives on the CSC (or Task Force coordinators) before submitting proposals – this will greatly facilitate broader involvement of IUFRO divisional units and Task Forces in the scientific program and avoid overlaps among sessions.
Session proposals from non‐IUFRO member organizations are encouraged although preference will be given to those that are prepared jointly with IUFRO Divisional Units and Task Forces (see https://www.iufro.org/science<https://www.iufro.org/science/>/<https://www.iufro.org/science/> for more information).
Type of sessions
Two types of sessions may be proposed. Sub-plenary sessions are expected to attract a large audience (from 550 to 2000 people) and to address the major elements of one of the Congress themes (see below). Sub-themes expand the theme descriptions and do not necessarily translate into sub-plenary sessions. Technical sessions should also focus on Congress themes or sub-themes but may be more narrow in their scope and attract from 45 to 700 attendees. Sub-plenary session proposals that are not approved by the CSC will be considered for Technical sessions.
Preparing and submitting a session proposal
Proposals should be submitted in English, online at https://iufro2024.com/session-proposals. For questions and technical support about session submission, please contact abstracts.iufro2024(a)appinconf.com<mailto:abstracts.iufro2024@appinconf.com>. Proposals will not be accepted after 13 October 2022.
Session proposals should include session title, moderator(s), description i.e. an abstract with the rationale of the session (400 words), organizers(s)’ details, suggested session time slot, alignment with Congress themes (ab. 100 words), session information with tentative titles and presenters, alignment with selection criteria (ab. 200 words), and relevant IUFRO Unit(s). Proposed sessions should be organized to be nominally 2 hours in length. For sessions involving oral presentations, we recommend that 15 min including discussion be adopted for standard oral presentations, and 30 min for sub-plenary talks. However, we encourage proponents to be innovative, and to consider panel discussions, interactive poster sessions and other session formats to engage Congress participants.
Modification of accepted session proposals
Please note that the abstract submission process will be open to all, so session organizers may need to include papers or posters that were not originally proposed for their sessions. Please be aware of this possibility and the need for flexibility in designing your session. In the event that the number of accepted abstracts for a particular session exceeds the number that can be accommodated in a single session, organizers may be given an additional session slot in the Congress program.
Criteria for selection
Session proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by members of the Congress Scientific Committee with primary consideration given to their scientific quality, relevance to the Congress themes, and geographic and gender diversity of proposed session organizers, moderators and proposed presenters. Other factors that will be considered are: the involvement of two or more IUFRO units (Divisions, Task Forces, Research Groups and Working Parties) and/or IUFRO and non‐IUFRO member organizations; and the involvement of students and early-career scientists and professionals. We strongly encourage submissions well in advance of the 13th October deadline.
Acceptance decisions will be made no later than 17 January 2023. An open Call for Abstracts will be issued on 1 February 2023, with online abstract submission until 2 June 2023, and acceptance decisions provided by 30 October. The Congress timelines are available at the Congress website (https://iufro2024.com/) and below.
Responsibilities of session organizers
Session organizers of accepted proposals are expected to communicate with prospective presenters regarding submission of abstracts (online), will be asked to review abstracts submitted for their sessions during the abstract review period (i.e., from June to October 2023) and are in charge of language editing of the accepted abstracts. They are also responsible for ensuring that session moderators attend the Congress and are encouraged to pursue publication options for papers presented in their sessions. Formal Congress proceedings with full papers will not be published. Session organizers, moderators and speakers will have to pay the Congress fee.
We look forward to hearing from you and for your active participation in the design of an excellent scientific program for the 2024 IUFRO Congress in Stockholm, Sweden.

> *ABSTRACT*
> What is meant by sustainability depends onwhat is sustained and atwhat
> level. Sustainable forest management, for example, requires
> maintenance of a variety of values not the least ofwhich is sustained
> timber yields (STYs). For the 1 Bha of theworld’s forests subjected to
> selective or partial logging, failure to maintain yields can be hidden
> by regulatory requirements and questionable auditing practices such as
> increasing the number of commercial species with each harvest,
> reducing the minimum size at which trees can be harvested and
> accepting logs of lower quality. For assertions of STY to be credible,
> clarity is needed about all these issues, as well as about the
> associated ecological and economic tradeoffs. Lack of clarity about
> sustainability heightens risks of unsubstantiated claims and unseen
> losses. STY is possible but often requires cutting cycles that are
> longer and logging intensities that are lower than prescribed by law,
> as well as effective use of low-impact logging practices and
> application of silvicultural treatments to promote timber stock
> recovery.These departures frombusiness-as-usual practices will lower
> profit margins but generally benefit biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Forests and trees can play a crucial role in addressing planetary challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss while moving towards sustainable economies and increasing food security.
The State of the World’s Forests 2022 (SOFO2022) provides three pathways to implement this new perspective of making development work with the environment: ‘protect’: measures for halting deforestation; ‘restore’: making land more productive, and ‘use’: investments in building economically viable green value chains that provide resilient livelihoods. SOFO2022 is a contribution to the implementation of SDG 15 (Life on Land) and the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests and its Global Forest Goals.
Important commitments regarding the world’s forests have been made at the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (UNFCCC COP26), the United Nations Environment Assembly 5.2 (UNEA 5.2), the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF17), and the Seoul Forest Declaration and the Ministerial Call on Sustainable wood adopted at World Forestry Congress (WFC) 2022.
Join FAO and Members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests in this discussion on interfaces between protection, restoration and sustainable use of forests as building blocks for a green recovery. Together they can conserve nature, better provide for human well-being, and contribute to inclusive recovery, build resilient and sustainable economies.

Call for Papers on Special Issue: Ecology and Management of Castanea
Chestnut is a widely distributed genus within the Fagaceae family with thirteen species naturally occurring in Europe, Asia, and North America, with naturalized and cultivated populations occurring in South America. In Europe, the chestnut-growing area devoted to wood production corresponds to 2 million hectares, and in North America the former range of chestnut species was 81 million hectares. The original ranges of Asian chestnut species have not been determined, but species have been cultivated for nut production for millennia.
The cultivation of European chestnut (Castanea sativa) is an important cultural, multi-functional resource for local economies and provides ecological benefits to increase biodiversity and protect against erosion and wildfire. Management systems and intensities highly vary among European countries although most of the area (79%) is managed as coppice stands. In North America, the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was one of the most widespread and culturally important species prior to its demise related to the blight disease caused by a fungus from Asia (Cryphonectria parasitica). Asian chestnuts species are critical in solving the disease problem for other chestnut species in Europe and North America, and local values are primarily related to nut production.
Knowledge gaps exist in understanding sustainable methods to manage, restore or regenerate chestnut stands naturally or artificially, particularly given challenges from climate change, changes in disturbance regimes, and threats from non-native pests and pathogens. Providing this special issue platform to synthesize and share research information on forest ecology and silviculture of the Castanea genus will contribute towards a better understanding of strategies needed to improve performance and success of restoring or sustaining chestnut forests in pure stands, as a component to enrich mixed stands, or as agroforestry ecosystems.
This idea of a special issue was borne out of a newly formed Working Party (1.01.13) within the Silviculture Division of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). This proposal represents the first major activity of this new working party. This special issue will have a global perspective, and the papers need to encompass research related to ecology, silviculture, or management of a chestnut species.
Potential topics and related themes are described below:
* Applied forest management research related to timber production, non-timber forest products, growth and yield, and wood properties.
* Ecological research on stand dynamics, management effects on ecological function and processes, or ecological relationships or impacts of associated species on chestnut management.
* Chestnut as a component in agroforestry, mixed species plantation, or coppice forest systems.
* Pests or pathogens in chestnut systems or pest resistance in managed forests, reintroduction plantings, or mixed species plantings.
* Restoration of extirpated chestnut species or performance of chestnut in reintroduction test plantings.
* Effects of genetic selections or breeding on performance of chestnut in forest plantings.
* Social science research related to chestnut restoration, management, or reintroduction.
* Climate change mitigation to maintain or restore chestnut.
Topics that focus solely on nut production as part of seed orchard management and topics focused solely on genetics or breeding without an ecological or silvicultural component are not pertinent to this special issue. We hope that the special issue will include all four major chestnut species (C. crenata, C. dentata, C. mollissima, and C. sativa), but papers on minor species (e.g., C. henryi, C. pumila, and C. seguinii) are also encouraged. The papers can include original research, but synthesis papers that summarize state of the knowledge and propose key insights are also encouraged.
Submission of manuscripts
Authors can submit manuscripts for the Special Issue using Editorial Manager. Please select "Management of Castanea" as the article type. Submitted manuscripts will be peer-reviewed according to the guidelines, available on the website, of the journal. Please note that articles will be published separately, in different volumes, after they are accepted, and will be grouped together online as a Special Issue. Submit your manuscript tohttps://www.editorialmanager.com/foreco/default.aspx<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.edito…> by June 30, 2022.

Post-doc in silviculture and forest modelling for climate change adaptation
The Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is seeking a highly motivated person for a two-year post-doc position to conduct research on the silviculture of temperate mixed broadleaved forests. The research shall be based mainly on georeferenced field experiments set up in mixed stands of oak, hornbeam, field maple, wild service tree and hazel. The objective is to provide key recommendations to guide the design, establishment and silviculture of such forest types.
The experiments were planted 2012-2014 and include a range of mixing patterns and species proportions. The research should also include a small wild service experiment planted across widely contrasting climate and soil gradients. The experiments were set up and are carried out in cooperation with partners in forestry practice. Some data were already collected by local citizen-science volunteers. Additional data should be collected during the post-doc period.
The analyses should quantify aspects of survival, early growth, stem quality and competition depending on species mixture, site characteristics, establishment practice and other relevant variables. Additional investigations may include the influence of climate, soil and establishment practice on tree phenology, root system development and biomass allocation. Hypotheses testing should be an integral part of the research. Duty station: Alnarp, Sweden

Announcement:
In the framework of the Tropical managed Forest Observatory (TmFO),
Cirad is offering a 6 months contract with possible extension of
another 6 months, based in Montpellier
*Job title*
Researcher (PhD) in ecological modelling of tropical forests
*Begining date **Ending date***
02/05/2022 01/11/2022
*Job description*
Since the early 1980s, Cirad and its partners set up experimental forest
plots for monitoring post-harvest tropical forest dynamics in order to
assess the effects of selective logging on the reconstitution of timber
stocks. Since 2026, these experimental sites are part of an
international network, the Tropical Managed Forest Observatory (TmFO),
coordinated by Cirad. Within this network, forets dynamics data
accumulated over more than thirty years can be used to simulate
post-harvest trajectories in tropical forests as a function of logging
intensity, and key environmental variables (climate, soil, etc.).. For
example , the recovery of the biomass, timber stockand changes in
biodiversity were assessed assessed on the scale of the Amazon basin.
The results showed under the present 35-year logging cycle in force in
Brazilian Amazonia, the recovery of timber stock is less than 50%. This
work in the Amazon region deserves to be extended to other tropical rain
forest regions for which the TmFO network has data, in order to assess
the conditions for the sustainability of timber production on a
pan-tropical scale. The TmFO network provides all the conditions
required to carry out this work in terms of data availability (4 sites
in Central Africa and 7 sites in South East Asia, representing a total
inventory of more than 400 ha). In order to carry out this study, it
will first be necessary to adapt the model used in Amazonia to the
context of other datasets in other continents (under a 6-month contract
from May 2022). The initial 6-month contract may be extended by the same
duration, depending on the preliminary results of this first 6-month
period and the funding obtained in 2023.

IUFRO Spotlight #91 - Forests and Water
IUFRO Spotlight is an initiative of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations. Its aim is to introduce, in a timely fashion, significant findings in forest research from IUFRO officeholders and member organizations to a worldwide network of decision makers, policy makers and researchers.
IUFRO will encapsulate, and distribute in plain language, brief, topical and policy-relevant highlights of those findings, along with information on where/how to access the full documents. The IUFRO Spotlight findings will be distributed in a periodic series of emails as well as blog postings.
Forests and Water
Science-Policy-Practice Interface for Managing Forest and Water Interactions under a Changing Environment

Water is fundamental to life on earth. What may not be quite so obvious is that forests are equally vital resources for life on the planet.
And the two – water and forests – are inseparable in the pursuit of a sustainable and sustainably developed world. Therefore, forests and water resources have been identified as essential elements in adaptation to climate change.
The IUFRO-sponsored Forests and Water science-policy forum at the IUFRO World Day provided a platform for scientists, forest managers and decision-makers from the Asia-Oceania region to share insights and experiences about forest and water interactions from different perspectives.
Among the significant challenges discussed by the forum panelists were the increasing competition for water resources, the positive and negative impacts of carbon sequestration due to large scale afforestation and reforestation, climate change-related shifts in rainfall patterns and capacity building requirements among civil groups at various levels to ensure competent engagement in forest and water management.
To address the challenges of competition for water, a range of technical, social and political actions have been suggested – technical advancements such as GIS, remote sensing and climate modelling to better understand the full hydrological cycle, targeted reforestation, better integration of planted forests in the wider landscape, good community engagement and tighter regulatory environments
[Photo showing a lake surrounded by mountains, with forests. Photo: Vandaagevenniet on Pixabay]
Vandaagevenniet on Pixabay
Integrated watershed management was also advocated as a way to deal with the impact of changes in rainfall due to climate change. This varies across the region; in some areas such as Japan there have been record-breaking heavy rains, while in others there have been droughts.
Forests play a crucial role in supplying clean water, help prevent environmental hazards such as soil erosion and flooding as well as ensuring many other ecological functions. Any forest changes – and their interactions with climate – can significantly affect water resources and water-related ecological functions and services.
Therefore, managing forests for water provision is an important priority in various international initiatives (Bonn Challenge, UN SDGs etc.). In addition, there is an active agenda to use reforestation for landscape restoration and to mitigate rising atmospheric carbon dioxide content.
The forum panelists also underlined that communicating and sharing technical advances and policies must be strengthened to ensure that research on forest and water interactions in a changing environment is appropriately addressed.
The opening address for the forum was delivered by IUFRO Vice President Liu Shirong of the Chinese Academy of Forestry.
Keynote presentations were given by Meine van Noordwijk, World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), Nairobi, Kenya; and by Richard Harper of Murdoch University, Perth, Australia. Richard Harper is also Deputy Coordinator of IUFRO’s Task Force on Forests and Water Interactions in a Changing Environment.
The panel discussion featured:
Brenda Baillie, Northland Regional Council, New Zealand;
Mingfang Zhang, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China;
Kyoichi Otsuki, Kyushu University, Japan;
Diomedes A. Racelis, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Philippines; and
Hyung Tae Choi, National Institute of Forest Science, Republic of Korea.
The online discussion was one of three science-policy forums organized for IUFRO World Day. (The other two – Forests and Fire and Forest-based Bioeconomy for All – will be covered in separate Spotlights.)
