Dear all,
Division 1 (Silviculture), Division 2 (Physiology and Genetics), and Division 7 (Forest Health) co-organized a technical session at the IUFRO Congress in Stockholm, 2024. The goal of the session is to showcase complementary research conducted within these divisions that can be brought together to address significant problems for future forests:
“Forest genetics tools to improve forest resilience to climate change and forest health” - T1.12
Trees are under increasing threat from pathogens and pests that can potentially cause a reduction in growth and wood quality, increasing levels of tree mortality, and functional extinction of tree species and disruption of associated ecosystems. The effects of climate change are likely to increase the impacts of these biotic agents and lead to drastic changes in the dynamics of forest ecosystems. Genetics is a basic building block for organisms and species to evolve and help mitigate impacts of damaging biotic and abiotic agents and can be especially valuable in long-lived tree species. The use of forest genetic knowledge and tree breeding is a valuable tool in helping to ensure the forests of the future are healthy and resilient. The presentations in this proposed technical session will examine successful breeding programs for both commercial tree species and keystone tree species valued for a myriad of ecosystem
services. Much of the current afforestation, reforestation, or restoration efforts use local seed sources, but under climate change, the adaptability of these populations may no longer be optimal; therefore, assisted migration is a tool widely being debated to replace or supplement local populations and help establish forests that will have the best chance of being healthy and resilient into the future. Success will require broad inter-disciplinary inputs from forest genetics, tree breeding, silviculture and forest health specialists at all stages of development and implementation. The technical session will address what is needed for success in both breeding and assisted migration, providing examples of successful applied programs and efforts that are underway. The current understanding of the genetics of the host-pathogen interaction will also be included. Understanding the interactions between hosts and pathogens may provide enhanced ways of increasing resistance to pathogens, such as targets for genetic engineering techniques. The topics addressed are broad but are all focussed on preventing forest trees from damage caused by pathogens. We will particularly encourage the participation of early career scientists and graduate students and invite posters to be presented.
The session includes talks and posters and the deadline for submission is 2 June 2023: https://iufro2024.com/call-for-congress-abstract.
We hope you will consider contributing to this session!

IUFRO Unit 1.01.04 Forest Establishment & Early Growth Dynamics
(Division 1.00.00-Silviculture)
FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
Reinvigorating planted forest establishment research, Rotorua, New Zealand, March 2025.
Hold the date!
The first international conference of IUFRO Unit 1.01.04 Forest Establishment & Early Growth Dynamics (formerly called Forest Vegetation Management) was held on July 11-13, 2017 in Corvallis, Oregon, USA. The title of the conference was Forest Regeneration in Changing Environments and the goal of the conference was to bring together leading forest researchers and practitioners to share their latest research on managing forest regeneration and early stand dynamics in changing environments around the globe.
With one conference missed due the COVID19 pandemic, much time has passed since the last conference... and it's time to reconnect! Since then, there has been a global shift towards planting billions of trees at scale to address issues of climate change and environmental degradation and to accelerate progress on opportunities to increase productivity in planted forests through technology and mechanisation. This combination of change (increased afforestation and adoption of new technologies) means establishment of planted forests is once again a highly topical area of forest science!
We're planning a conference for our working group, in Rotorua, New Zealand, in early 2025 to once again bring together all those interested in planted forest establishment and early growth dynamics.
If you think this would be of interest to you or your colleagues please share this news. We'd like to hear from you about any themes or topics you want to see included in the conference by latest July 2023.
Please contact: Carol Rolando (Unit Co-ordinator) Carol.rolando(a)scionresearch.com<mailto:Carol.rolando@scionresearch.com> or Charles Nock (Deputy Lead) nock(a)ualberta.ca<mailto:nock@ualberta.ca> to express your interest in attending this event or share your ideas.

[cid:image002.jpg@01D90EFF.3224C460]The Yale Chapter of the International Society of Tropical Foresters (ISTF) will host its 29th Annual Conference titled: "Envisioning the future of tropical forests: the roles of feedbacks, interconnectedness, and adaptation". The conference will take place on February 2 - 4th, 2023. Registration is now live at https://cglink.me/2dA/r1902026.
The Yale ISTF Chapter is dedicated to the advancement of tropical forest studies at the Yale School of the Environment, formerly known as the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. The ISTF conference has been hosted at Yale for 28 years and addresses a range of socio-ecological issues related to tropical forests. ISTF 2023 will weave together myriad perspectives on the current state of tropical forest feedbacks, shedding light on how these processes are changing now and are predicted to change in the future. The conference will facilitate a space to discuss the importance of interconnectedness and adaptation amidst anthropogenic-driven climate change, collaborating across fields to build solutions for a more resilient future in the tropics and beyond.
The conference will feature keynote addresses by:
1. Dr. Juliette Biao Koudenoukpo, Director of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) Secretariat
1. Mina Susana Setra, Deputy to Secretary General of the Indigenous Peoples' Alliance of the Archipelago (AMAN) on Social Culture Affairs
1. Dr. Pablo Pacheco, Global Forests Lead Scientist at World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
The conference will be held in a virtual format, and the full agenda will be available in the coming weeks. We hope that the hybrid format will allow wider access and flexibility for attendees around the world, especially for participants and speakers that have historically faced difficulties with travel to the United States.
Visit the website<https://istfconference.events.yale.edu/> and follow ISTF on Facebook @yalefesistf<https://www.facebook.com/yalefesistf>, Twitter @YaleISTF<https://twitter.com/YaleISTF>, and Instagram @YaleISTF<https://www.instagram.com/yaleistf/> for updates as more conference details unfold!
We look forward to seeing you there!
