Oaks are considered a keystone species in many regions of the world but are increasingly threatened by deforestation, nonnative invasive pests and pathogens, climate change, altered disturbance regimes, and gaps in critical knowledge for silviculture and management. Rural and urban communities will continue to lose vital ecosystem services and values provided by oak trees and forests without further development and application of practical science-based silviculture and management at stand and landscape levels. Substantial progress has been made in research and science delivery for oak ecology, silviculture, and management since the mid-20th century. Prescriptions and general applications of solutions, however, are often elusive and difficult to develop. His research focuses on the relationships between energy, social welfare, and environmental change in developing countries. Rob’s current research focuses mainly on biomass energy, ranging from traditional energy carriers like wood and charcoal to advanced liquid biofuels. Rob is also interested in social impact assessment and life-cycle approaches to help understand the implications of increased reliance on non-traditional forms of bioenergy. Rob has a B.S. in physics from Pennsylvania State University, an M.S. from Northwestern University, and a Ph.D. in energy and resources from the University of California, Berkeley. Assessing health and climate impacts of woodfuels and other household energy options, Rob Bailis Over two billion people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) rely on biomass fuels like wood and charcoal to meet their basic needs. Small-scale biomass burning results in pollution that damages health and drives climate change. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and grid-based electricity are scalable alternatives to biomass but have also raised climate and health concerns. In this presentation, we review the sources of emissions from common household fuels and discuss some recent assessments of health and climate impacts of business-as-usual (BAU) and alternative household energy pathways. We find full transitions to LPG and/or electricity decrease emissions and result in slight global temperature reductions. Shifting from biomass to alternative fuels would also reduce health risks. We close by discussing policy implications and examine some incentives that could accelerate a clean cooking transition. [cid:ii_lkoho0p31] Adrian Ghilardi, Associate Professor at the Environmental Geography Research Center at UNAM, Mexico Adrian Ghilardi is an Associate Professor at the National University of Mexico (UNAM). He is interested in the environmental impacts of fuelwood extraction and charcoal production under traditional patterns. He designed and maintains the MoFuSS tool: www.mofuss.unam.mx<http://www.mofuss.unam.mx>. Currently, Adrian's main research interest is to find ways to validate non-renewable biomass estimates produced at the landscape level by MoFuSS, in several woodfuel hot spots across Central America, sub-Saharan Africa, and India. Prior to joining the UNAM Faculty, Adrian was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University. He holds a Ph.D. from UNAM in Natural Resource Management. New estimates of non-renewable biomass in Sub-Saharan Africa for the period 2010-2050, Adrian Ghilardi Clean cooking projects around the world rely heavily on carbon savings credits that are estimated under the assumption that a reduced consumption of woodfuels will result in fewer net CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. Even though this logic is correct, quantifying how much net CO2 is emitted by traditional cooking is difficult, in part due to the wide variation in space and time in how the vegetation responds to woody biomass harvest. To help clean cooking projects estimate the sustainability of woodfuel harvest (namely the fraction of non-renewable biomass or fNRB) in both a Business-as-Usual and intervention scenarios, we developed MoFuSS: a methodology that integrates many of the complexities associated with woody biomass harvest patterns and natural regrowth. We will present new estimates of non-renewable biomass in Sub-Saharan African countries for the period 2010–2050, with emphasis on the policy implications of these results. [cid:ii_lkohoia72]Moses Kazungu, Environmental Social Economist, Social Sciences in Landscape Research Group, Research Unit Economics and Social Sciences, Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL, Switzerland Moses Kazungu, PhD, is an Environmental Social Economist specializing in forest economics. He obtained his doctoral degree from the Technical University of Munich, where his research focused on rural household forest use, behaviours, and their connection to deforestation and forest degradation in the Miombo areas of Zambia. Dr. Kazungu is a postdoctoral researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forests, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) in Birmensdorf, Switzerland. His current research interests revolve around understanding public preferences for forest ecosystems and assessing the impacts of forest restoration approaches on perceived forest ecosystem benefits in Europe. Balancing livelihood provision and forest preservation: Charcoal Production in the Miombo areas of Zambia, Moses Kazungu (With Eliza Zhunusova, Anastasia Lucy Yang, Gillian Kabwe, Davison J. Gumbo, Sven Günter) Forests are vital for rural communities in tropical areas, including Zambia, where they cover over 60% of the land, providing income opportunities and ecosystem services. In Zambia's Miombo areas, forests are the primary source of fuelwood. However, limited research on forest use strategies hampers effective rural livelihood improvement and forest preservation policies. Our study focused on four landscapes in Zambia's Copperbelt province, including restricted and non-forest areas. We surveyed 412 households between 2017–2018 and used multinomial logistic regression to determine the factors affecting forest use choices. Charcoal production varied: 4.03 m3/year/AEU (447.29 kg/year) in restricted landscapes and 2.43 m3/year/AEU (269.51 kg/year) in non-restricted areas. Forest strategies included specialised charcoal sellers, forest food and charcoal sellers, and pure subsistence users. Age, household size, off-farm income, distances, and restrictions influenced charcoal households. Findings emphasize the importance of understanding household forest use strategies to inform targeted policy designs for rural livelihoods. [cid:ii_lkohouuj3]Hisham Zerriffi, Associate Professor in Forest Resources Management at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada Hisham Zerriffi is an Associate Professor in Forest Resources Management at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Hisham’s research is at the intersection of technology, energy and the environment, with a particular focus on rural areas of the developing world. Much of his research focuses on institutional factors impacting the diffusion of new technology, determinants and patterns of household energy choice and welfare implications of rural energy use. Prior to joining the UBC Faculty, Hisham was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University. He holds a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in Engineering and Public Policy. Unpacking the Complex Socio-Ecological Relationships Between Household Energy and Forests, Hisham Zerriffi Studies of the environmental consequences of household fuelwood use has largely focused on the net carbon impacts of wood harvesting. This forms the basis of many carbon crediting programs that fund clean cookstove interventions. However, in addition to these global implications of woodfuel use, there are also local socio-ecological dynamics related to household fuelwood usage. This presentation will review a selection of studies addressing this relationship. This includes studies on the spatial aspects of village-level fuelwood collection, changes in farm vs. forest fuelwood collection in response to cookstove interventions and revealed vs. stated preferences for specific wood species for household energy. Together these studies show a complex set of relationships between household energy choices and local biomass resources. A better understanding of this relationship is needed to understand drivers and constraints of household energy choices for moving to cleaner cooking fuels and the potential environmental consequences of household energy transitions.

Session description To conserve biodiversity, multiple approaches can be taken on the ground. This mini-symposium (Panel, Flash-talks & Posters) represents experts who focus on complementary aspects of conservation and reforestation; threat assessment, seed collecting and banking from wild trees, collective action and civic engagement, the roles of public gardens in conserving genetic resources, developing genetic resistance to pests to conserve biodiversity, and the importance of conserving genetic diversity in the face of pests and climate change. Seed is the unit by which biodiversity is propagated, and therefore, protected. There is ever increasing pollination disruption with shifting local climate conditions and more fragmented and degraded native ecosystems. As forests and genetic diversity are lost, so are mother trees for seed collection, in a time when people want to greatly scale reforestation efforts. In addition to potential declines in seed crops, global trade, biodiversity loss, and fragmentation increase the threat of emergent insect and pathogen outbreaks, resulting in local or range-wide extinction of iconic tree species. Therefore, there is a global need for threat assessments, seed collection and banking of native tree species. In the context of the above challenges and solutions, public gardens and arboreta are critical to the resilience of forests and society. In addition to acting as living collections, seed sources, and refugia of tree species, public gardens serve as biodiversity hotspots in cities, and meeting places for public and volunteer conservation efforts and outreach. As sentinels, trees in public gardens can be used to proactively detect emergent disease threats. Through collective action, exchange of information, public engagement, and local expert knowledge, "think global, act local" could be applied to aid proactive efforts to protect forest biodiversity from the next major pests across the world. Local experts and civic ecologists can accomplish this by collecting seed and observing trees in native environments, plantations, public gardens, and urban forests. Breeding or human-directed genetic improvement presents a practical solution for restoration of species that are impacted by emergent pest epidemics, climate change, or other threats. The utility of breeding to protect biodiversity also depends on the prior establishments of seed banks and other germplasm resources. It is critical to generate a prior understanding of the diversity of populations of tree species valued for their ecological, horticultural, or economic and commercial characteristics, the observed or potential effects of threats to those populations, and the role diversity could play in recovery of species. Jacobs, Stephen Cavers, René Zamora Cristales Climate change impacts and anthropogenic activities have destroyed vast tracts of forest across the globe. Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) is a planned national, international, and global process that aims to restore degraded forest land to increase ecological functionality and human well-being. Research has shown that nearly 2 billion ha of land is suitable for FLR, but these future forests will have to have high resilience to withstand growing climate change impacts. One strategy for handling these pressures is to carefully manage levels of genetic diversity in forests restored by humans to ensure adaptive potential. This session invites presentations on how forest genetic resources can be effectively deployed during the planning, initiation, establishment, and future management of forests restored under the FLR. The session will focus on five thematic questions: 1. How can we effectively deploy the genetic diversity of native trees, herbs, and shrubs during forest restoration? 2. How can multifunctional use of forests (e.g., multipurpose trees, biomass, non-timber forest produce, etc.) be enhanced through genetic resource management? 3. Which forest management and silvicultural interventions can be used in FLR to increase gene flow? 4. How should we plan tree breeding programs to increase environmental and disease tolerance without compromising the natural genetic diversity of the population? 5. How can we integrate FGR management with the nursery sector at national and international levels to ensure supply of high quality, genetically diverse planting stock? 6. How we can produce seeds and plants to implement commitments under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, and regional Initiatives such as 20x20 in Latin America and AFR100 in Africa? The session will have a global focus comprising FLR and forest genetic resources in all terrestrial forest ecosystems. Regards Somidh Saha Session number T3.3 Oral / Poster Disappearing oak woods: conservation and management of global oak forests Organized by: Somidh Saha, Teresa Fidalgo Fonseca, Magnus Löf, Daniel C. Dey Oaks (Quercus spp.) are foundational species in many forest ecosystems. There are more than 500 species of oaks worldwide, and they can be naturally found in all continents except Antarctica and Australia. They exist in temperate broadleaved forests, subtropical and tropical montane/submontane forests, and temperate and subtropical arid and scrub forests. Mature oak trees provide direct and indirect support to thousands of species. For example, in the UK, old Quercus robur trees are associated with nearly 2300 species of flora and fauna. In addition to high biodiversity values, oaks provide high-quality timber and a wide range of other ecosystem services. Most of the oak species are long-living in their respective ecosystem; hence, they are essential for ecosystem functioning and health. However, oak forests worldwide are declining due to climate change impacts, diseases, habitat destruction, and the replacement of oak trees by fast-growing tree species. The report of oak decline has been emerging in scientific literature since the end of the 20th century. Therefore, there is an urgent global need to sensibilize and work towards the conservation and sustainable use of remaining oak forests. Moreover, we call to BRING BACK THE OAKS in their native ecosystem, where they used to thrive for thousands of years, to increase biodiversity, ecosystem services, and resilience to climate change impacts. Therefore, the planned session invites contributions to oak forests conservation, restoration, regeneration, and management. The proposed session aims to invite contributions from all different oak forest ecosystems comprising a wide range of topics. In the temperate zone, seed production of common tree species tends to be highly variable between years and synchronized spatially, a phenomenon termed masting. The use of AI in forestry is relatively new, especially when compared to the early adoption of AI in other fields such as agriculture. In forest biometry, the irruption of AI spins researchers and practitioners to unfold the analysis of complex big data. Narrow AI, defined as an AI system that is specified to perform a limited task, is commonly applied in forest biometry (e.g., analysis of forest structure with 3D point cloud data). Currently, it is possible to efficiently prototype AI algorithms thanks to plenty of publicly available databases, open-source libraries, and the accessibilityto computing platforms. However, the application of AI in forest biometry is mainly focused on improving predictions. Due to the potential power of AI, opportunities are open to broad applications of AI, such as enhancing the understanding of forest processes. Thus, it is important to discuss, jointly with academia and industrialsectors, about the implications, limitations, and capabilities of this technology as an alternative quantitative method. Mixed forest plantations as natured-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation Session organizers: Hernán Serrano-León, Ramona Werner, Joel Jensen, Hervé Jactel, Carolyn Glynn Forest plantations globally provide an increasingly large share of the wood products that contribute to a carbon-neutral bioeconomy, while reducing the harvest pressure on native and natural forests. Their importance is likely to increase with the projected rise in the global demand for the provision of multiple forest goods, and the increasing threat to natural forests posed by climate change. Yet, plantations are faced with controversies related to the potential negative impacts of dominating monospecific plantations for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem functions and to the increasing vulnerability of monocultures to biotic and abiotic risks intensified by climate change (CC). A growing body of evidence suggests that multi-specific mixed forest plantations provide a wider array of ecosystem services and can be more efficient in sequestrating carbon, while better coping with CC-related stress and biotic disturbances. These results can be traced to mechanisms of complementary or facilitated resource use and alleviated competition in mixed plantations, and can result from a “portfolio effect” of diversification that minimizes the risk of a given species or forest function to be drastically affected. Nevertheless, there is an apparent reluctance among landowners and stakeholders to adopt mixed plantations as a nature-based solution for CC mitigation and adaptation. Among the possible factors preventing the expansion of mixed plantations is an insufficient scientific base for management practices regarding the type of species mixtures that optimize CC mitigation, adaptation and ecosystem functioning across contrasting site conditions. This session focuses on findings from tree diversity experiments, silvicultural trials comparing mixtures with monocultures, and analyses of the socio-economic contexts of tree-species diverse plantations. This session presents recent research that 1) improves the mechanistic understanding behind the potential of mixed- forest plantations to mitigate and adapt to climate change, or 2) identifies trade-offs and synergies among adaptation, mitigation and other objectives in the management of mixed-forest plantations. Throughout the world and in the literature the concept goes by many semi-synonyms which do not exactly mean the same but are headed approximately into the same direction. For example, one of these semi-synonyms is nature-based forest management. CCF has a long history in Central Europe but is comparatively new to other parts of the world. Currently the popularity of CCF is on the increase again for its potential to mitigate climate change, to increase or at least maintain biodiversity in forest ecosystems, to provide valuable tools for forest conservation and to enhance the appeal of woodlands used for recreation. Recently the EU forest strategy for 2030 stated clearcutting should be “used only in duly justified cases, for example, when proven necessary for environmental or ecosystem health reasons” and the strategy promotes “the creation or maintenance at stand and landscape level of genetically and functionally diverse, mixed‐species forests.” Early in 2022, the European Forest Institute (EFI) has launched a new strategy underpinning CCF principles with scientific evidence. It is particularly the early phase of transitioning towards CCF, i.e. the introduction of CCF to a country or region where this management type has not been commonly used before, which usually constitutes a major challenge for forest practice and stakeholders. For example, this was the situation 20 years ago in Ireland and in the UK and CCF is now being considered for introduction in the congress host country Sweden. A long-standing and crucial question is how natural disturbances can be more directly included in the design of CCF methods. The recent global energy crisis has added another challenging facet to implementing CCF and methods like the coppice selection system and coppice with standards may now assume greater importance than they did in the past. A topic close to the heart of forest practice is the important question how, in the context of these current challenges, the sustainability of ecosystem goods and services can be ensured in CCF and its variants. To submit your abstract, please take the following steps: 1. Consult the list of sessions at Call for Congress Abstract | IUFRO Stockholm 2024 (iufro2024.com)<https://iufro2024.com/call-for-congress-abstract> 2. Submit your abstract at Abstract Submission | IUFRO 2024<https://www.appinconf.com/kas/Abstract?projectName=iufro2024abstracts> A form for abstract submission is available online. You will be required to insert a title (max 150 characters), authors with their affiliation (the author presenting the paper or poster at the Congress must be designated as the Presenting Author), and text (max 350 words describing context, specific topic of the study, methods, main results, and conclusions in plain writing). No figures, tables or list of references should be added. Please note that abstracts may be submitted in English only. Authors must select one of the following options: oral only; poster only; oral or poster. The session organizers will decide on the length of a talk, which could range from 2-3 minutes for flash talks to 15 minutes or more for regular talks. Please note that poster presenters will be given the opportunity to present their work orally (2-3 min) during moderated poster sessions. The Congress will feature only digital poster displays to ensure high visibility for poster presentations. Poster areas will be open and free to visit during the whole Congress. Authors are limited to a maximum of two abstracts as presenting author, although an individual may be listed as a co-author on several abstracts. Abstracts not associated with one of the sessions in the list may be assigned to a general poster session. I am pleased to invite and encourage you to nominate suitable candidates for the various categories of awards as listed below. The deadline for submission of nominations has been extended to 25th May 2023. SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD (SAA) Up to 10 awards will be given in recognition of distinguished individual scientific achievements within the fields of research covered by IUFRO. Nominations may be made by a member of the nominee's parent organization, by Coordinators of Divisions, Research Groups, Working Parties and Task Forces, and by other officeholders and knowledgeable persons associated with the Union (but no self-nominations). Nominees must either belong to Member Organizations or be Individual Members of IUFRO. Please FILL IN THE NOMINATIONS FORM before 25th May 2023: https://forms.office.com/r/gjXvQgc2vV IUFRO STUDENT AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN FOREST SCIENCE (ISA) This award recognizes outstanding individual achievements in forest science made by Masters degree students (or equivalent) completed in the period 2018-2023, in order to encourage their further work within the fields of research covered by IUFRO. One award per IUFRO Division may be made for work related to the themes of the IUFRO World Congress. Nominations can be made through IUFRO Members and through the International Forestry Students' Association (IFSA) via the IFSA Secretariat/Liaison Officer. The Award shall consist of a certificate, the most economical cost of (air) travel/subsidized travel to attend the World Congress, and waiver of the Congress registration fee. The SAA will be presented at the opening or closing ceremony of the World Congress. For the ODRA and ISA, the awards will be presented in a special session where awardees are given the opportunity to present highlights of their award winning work. All award winners will be announced in a special issue of IUFRO News and in other media. A number of awards will be presented for applications submitted by the corresponding author during the online submission of the abstract. Applications shall be finalized two months before the Congress by submitting the final pdf of the poster presentation. Shortlisted poster presentations will be judged directly at the IUFRO World Congress. The awards will be mentioned during the closing ceremony. IUFRO World Congress Host Scientific Award This award honours one or more truly outstanding scientists from the Congress host country who has elevated the profile of forest science and research.
