Mark your calendars for the Latsis Symposium 2018!
The Latsis Symposium 2018 will bring together leading scientists and
practitioners to address the ecological, economic, and societal challenges
for scaling-up forest restoration. The symposium is motivated by the
challenge of delivering an effective global response to two major
environmental threats, climate change and forest degradation through
restoration.
The goal of the 2-day symposium is to work towards a conceptual
understanding of the challenges and opportunities for scaling-up forest
restoration efforts to meet Bonn Challenge targets. Presentations by experts
from academia, non-governmental organisations, and the business sector will
help to frame and inform discussions on forest restoration approaches.

Subject: Postdoc position in Forest Modelling in Romania
Dear colleagues and friends,
The National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry (INCDS) “Marin Drăcea” in Romania is hiring a post-doc for two years.
The position should start as soon as possible and preferably in June this year. We are looking for somebody with a background in forest ecology and modelling to implement a forest landscape simulation model aimed at forecasting the future of Romanian forests under range of climate and management scenarios.

The only hard requirement of the position is that candidates must have working rights within the EU.

IUFRO Working Party 1.01.06 - Ecology and silviculture of oak is holding a satellite session on "Ecology and Silviculture of Sub-tropical and Tropical Oaks under Global Change" during the Sixth International Conference on Plants & Environmental Pollution (ICPEP-6); Lucknow, India; 27-30 November 2018.
Oak (Quercus spp.) trees are an important component of many hilly forests in sub-tropical and tropical areas in Central America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Oak forests in these parts of the world are declining and becoming vulnerable to climate change impacts such as droughts, floods, forest fires, mudslides, and cyclones. In addition, deforestation, poverty, rising level of pollution, and lack of sustainable forest management practices further contribute to the degradation of oak forests. This represents a significant ecological crisis because oak forests are known for high biodiversity and provide a wide range of ecosystem services to local populations. Therefore, immediate focus should be given to conservation and sustainable management of oak forests. However, our understanding of the ecology and silviculture of many subtropical and tropical oak species is inadequate. In this session, we welcome submissions of research and review works on subtropical and tropical oaks on a wide range of topics in the field of (but NOT limited to): forest ecology, restoration ecology, silviculture, soil science, biodiversity conservation, forest management, forest economics, forest entomology, forest pathology, traditional ecological knowledge, genetics, etc. The contributions in this session will be published in a special issue of an appropriate peer-reviewed journal.

Associate Professor or Full Professor in Silviculture (Deadline: January 31, 2018)
Applications are invited for a tenure-track position in the Departments of Forest and Conservation Sciences or Forest Resources Management, Faculty of Forestry, University of British Columbia. The successful candidate is expected to be appointed at the Associate or Full Professor level. Applicants should have a Ph.D. (or the equivalent) and significant research experience in silviculture, an international reputation as a leading scholar and a commitment to educating undergraduate, professional masters, and research graduate students. Eligibility to become a BC Registered Professional Forester is highly desirable. The successful candidate should be able to bring relevant scientific knowledge and understanding to public debate on silvicultural policy and practice. The successful candidate will be expected to secure funding from external sources such as NSERC and other governmental and industrial organizations. Research themes should include silvicultural practices and problems. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in silviculture and contribute to spring and fall field schools. The position may also include acting as a program director for an undergraduate or professional master's program. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The Faculty of Forestry has strong teaching and research programs that embrace the full range of forest science and management at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Faculty offers undergraduate programs in Forest Sciences, Forestry, Urban Forestry, Natural Resource Conservation and Wood Processing, along with professional master's programs in Sustainable Forest Management, Geomatics and Environmental Management, and International Forestry. The Faculty has two research forests, which represent a range of forest ecosystems, as well as a Forest Sciences Centre with modern research and teaching facilities and a strong supporting community of scholars.
