The Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) is awarding one extraordinary
individual for improving our forests and the lives of people who depend on
them!
The CPF launched the first Wangari Maathai Award in 2012 to honour and
commemorate the impact of this extraordinary woman who championed forest
issues around the world.
In 2021, the CPF will award one individual for her/his outstanding
achievements for forests during the XV World Forestry Congress (24-28 May
2021, Seoul, Korea).
The awardee will receive a cash prize of USD 20 000 along with international
recognition of the outstanding contributions to preserve, restore and
sustainably manage forests and to raise awareness of the key role forests
play in supporting local communities, rural livelihoods, women, youth and
the environment.
The Wangari Maathai Award is an initiative of CBD, CIFOR, CITES, FAO, GEF,
ICRAF, ITTO, IUCN, IUFRO, UNCCD, UNDP, UNEP, UNFCCC, UNFF and World Bank,
all members of the CPF. Nominations will be reviewed by an international
jury of renowned personalities, who will also take into consideration such
elements as empowering women, youth and civil society, fostering social
commitment, promoting networks and improving the valuation of forests in
society.
Eligibility: Applicants should be nominated by a third party. Nominees may
be persons, living or recently deceased, who have made exceptional
contributions to forests. Professional and research contributions will only
be considered if they are conducted outside of normal work-related
responsibilities. Applications received from a nominee's kin or business
partner are not eligible for consideration. Applications related to
grassroots initiatives are particularly encouraged.
Selection: The closing date for receipt of nominations is 15 September 2020.
The awardee will be selected by a jury nominated by CPF members, which will
take into account gender and regional balance when considering potential
awardees.
Announcement: The awardee will be notified of their selection via email in
February 2021. This year's Wangari Maathai Award will be presented during
the XV World Forestry Congress <http://wfc2021korea.org/> (24-28 May 2021),
at the Coex Convention Center in Seoul, Korea.
To submit an application: Please send completed nominations to the CPF
Secretariat at cpf(a)un.org. Find more information and the application
guidelines which should be used when submitting your nomination at the
website <http://www.cpfweb.org/97445/en/> .

It is with immense pleasure that we announce the 1st International
Electronic Conference on Forests (IECF):
Forests for a Better Future: Sustainability, Innovation, Interdisciplinarity
Virtual Conference; 15-30 November 2020
Forests and forestry activities provide an opportunity to address the
pressing challenge of climate change through sustainable production. Forests
also play a strategic role in mitigating critical issues, including
biodiversity conservation, water regulation, energy efficiency, pollution
reduction and mitigation, production of raw biological materials, food
safety, and human and ecosystem health and poverty.
Forests contribute to the improvement of some important development issues
focused on sustainability and responsible forest management as a shared and
essential factor to address global challenges and guarantee the conservation
and enhancement of the global forest heritage as well as the socio-economic
development of production, environmental, and socio-cultural chains.
The global pandemic has forced us to reduce travel and to reflect on our
ability to leave scientific acquisitions as a legacy to future generations.
This reduced mobility stimulates us to maintain connections with the
scientific network using emerging technologies. This conference is an
opportunity to communicate our shared passion for forests, forest products
and services, and forest biodiversity.
The conference will discuss the state of the art of forestry operations,
wood supply chains, and ecosystem services, and objectives for the future
will be sought. Sharing and discussing the latest research findings with the
global community of scientists in the field of forests is the central
purpose of this virtual meeting.
Topics of the conference include:
- Forest Ecology, Management and Restoration
- Forest Genetics, Ecophysiology and Biology
- Forests and Urban Forest Sustainability
- Forest Inventory, Quantitative Methods and Remote Sensing
- Wood Science, Production Chains and Fuelwood
- Forest Operations and Engineering
- Fire Risks and Other Natural Hazards
IECF is a virtual conference sponsored by Forests (ISSN 1999-4907; Impact
Factor 2.116 (2018)). Participation is free of charge for authors and
attendees. Accepted papers will be gathered in the proceedings of the
conference. Selected extended versions of the papers will be published in a
Forests conference Special Issue with a 20% discount applied to the article
processing charge
(https://www.mdpi.com/journal/Forests/special_issues/IECF2020)
IECF offers you the opportunity to participate in this international,
scholarly conference without having the concern or expenditure of travel-all
you need is your computer and access to the Internet. We would like to
invite you to "attend" this conference by presenting your latest work.
For more information on IECF, please visit the conference website

Betreff: Call for contributions ETFRN News 60: Restoring African drylands
Restoring African drylands
ETFRN News 60 – a call for contributions
31 March 2020
ETFRN News 60 will focus on dryland landscape restoration, from government and private sector reforestation to farmer managed natural regeneration, improvements to grasslands and rainfed agriculture, changes in tenure and governance, management of exotic species and bush encroachment. It will look at how to ensure smallholder and community participation and financing, while assessing the myriad roles of varied policies, current and potential roles of the private sector and non-governmental organisations, and how different relationships with local people and associations influence the eventual impacts. The environmental impacts of landscape-level restoration appear to be clear, the social impacts less so, and these will also be further analysed in the light of the above contexts.
While acknowledging that dryland restoration efforts are occurring globally, this edition will focus on African experiences and especially those from the Sahel and the Greater Horn of Africa, though those from elsewhere that could bring such cases into context will also be considered. This ETFRN News will highlight lessons learned in the broadest sense, identifying barriers and knowledge gaps, and opportunities that would promote effective scaling out of what could guarantee the most positive social, environmental and economic impacts. It will build on the current momentum for landscape restoration, supporting and complementing national initiatives, and the commitments of governments to international goals agreed through conventions and declarations.
If you have a story to tell on dryland restoration in Africa and would like to share it, send a short outline (half page to a page) to the co-editors Nick Pasiecznik (nick.pasiecznik(a)tropenbos.org) and Chris Reij ( <mailto:chris.reij@wri.org> chris.reij(a)wri.org) by 30 April 2020. When doing so, please consider the following questions that this edition will look at answering…
· What factors (technical, social, policy, economic, financial) contributed to the success or failure of the dryland restoration approach/mechanism/experience, and in what ways?
· To what extent were different stakeholders consulted, involved and who benefitted, including local communities, gender and youth aspects?
· Is landscape restoration providing any broader benefits, e.g. improving community resilience, food, fodder, fuel and water security, and to reducing poverty, out-migration, conflict and extremism?
· How can effective restoration initiatives be better financed, and what other measures are needed to maximise scaling out to the level required to meet national and international goals?
· At a global level, how can the current international attention for dryland forest and landscape restoration be better translated into successes on the ground?
All those submitting abstracts will be contacted by 15 May, and successful authors will be offered a framework and a dedicated editor to assist in transforming summaries to illustrated realities. Full articles (2500-3000 words) must then be submitted at the latest by 15 July, and following editing and review, will be published online, beginning in October. They will then be published together as a printed compendium, for release in January 2021.
