IUFRO 2012, All D5 Conference in Portugal - Second announcement
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
The next IUFRO All-Division5 Conference is to be held in Estoril, Lisbon,
July 8-13th 2012.
IUFRO, along with the Technical University of Lisbon/ ISA would like to
extend an invitation to the entire forest sector to participate in this
international event.
Forests play a vital role for rural as well as urban populations all over
the world. They are an essential natural resource providing multiple
benefits to people.
Their conservation and sustainable management are closely linked with global
issues such as food supply and environmental protection.
Scientific knowledge is needed all over the world to effectively address
these issues globally and regionally and provide the basis for political
decisions.
Close international cooperation in forest science and related disciplines is
required to enable forests to satisfy the manifold human needs in a
sustainable way.
This conference is designed to bring together researchers in forest products
and related fields from around the world. Discussion will embrace progress
and needs in research to meet rapidly increasing demands for all kinds of
forest products, while maintaining the forest as a source of such products
and a resource for social, economic and environmental benefits.
The major topics to be discussed are:
· Wood Quality
· Properties and Utilization of Plantation Woods
. Physio-mechanical Properties of Wood
· Energy and Chemicals from Forest Biomass
· Wood-based materials and their Applications
· Forest Products Marketing
· Wood Processing
· Non-wood Forest Products
· Wood Protection
· Forest Products Education
· Composites and Reconstituted Products

Betreff: International boreal forest research conference 'Forest management
and silviculture in the north - balancing future needs' - Final Call
Dear IUFRO colleagues,
September 6 - 8, 2011 IUFRO WP 1.01.01 Boreal forest silviculture and
management together with the SNS-network group NORFOR ('Sustainable forest
management in northern Fennoscandia') arrange an international forest
research conference in Mid-Norway (near Trondheim). The Norwegian Forest and
Landscape Institute is host organization for the conference.
The conference title is 'Forest management and silviculture in the north -
balancing future needs'.
Scientific topics
1. Silviculture in the north in times of climate change:
· Climate change: effects on productivity and carbon sequestration in
northern forests.
· Insects and pathogens in northern forest systems under global
warming - consequences for forest production and implications for
silviculture.
· Cost-effective regeneration, pre-commercial thinning and young stand
management to maintain or increase biomass production of northern forest
ecosystems.
2. Multifunctional forestry and environmental services:
· Developing adaptive silvicultural systems to maintain biodiversity
values and production levels.
· Reducing conflicts between wood production and non-timber values
such as reindeer husbandry, berry production and recreational activities.
· Implementing coherent forest policy and certification schemes that
are consistent with forest productivity, stand management, climate
mitigation and biodiversity goals.
