Dear colleagues and friends,
please see attached the first announcement for the *8th International
Workshop on Resistance Mechanisms and Breeding in Forest Trees "*Putting
promise to practice in the face of global challenges"*. *
The workshop is sponsored by the IUFRO working parties *7.03.11* “Tree
Resistance to Insects and Pathogens” and *2.02.15* “Breeding and Genetic
Resources of Five-Needle Pines" and will take place on *June 2 to 6, 2025,
in Vernon, British Columbia.*
*SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP*: The Tree Resistance Workshops series provides an
international forum to discuss the status and future plans for both tree
resistance breeding programs and scientific research efforts in the field
of tree resistance mechanisms against pathogens and insects. The topics of
discussion will include, among others, conventional tree breeding
initiatives, ecology and genetics of resistance and tree-antagonistic
relationships in natural and managed tree populations, mechanisms of
recognition and signaling of biotic damage and plant defensive strategies,
comparative genomics, GWAS, genomic selection and other genomic initiatives
looking for resistance, interactive effects of climate change and abiotic
stressors with biotic resistance, the role of microbiome in resistance, and
new methods, technology, and tools for resistance screening. The primary
audience is those involved with operational breeding programs as well as
academic researchers and extension professionals. We welcome the
participation of students and early career professionals.
*PLEASE HELP US*: To help with the planning of the event, please let us
know your interest and if you are planning to attend by filling out the
following short survey by May 31st, 2024: View/vote in browser

Branching out: the forest podcast - Episode 6
Dear Reader of IUFRO News:
The season finale of our podcast, The way forward for forests, science and
people
<https://www.iufro.org/news/article/2024/04/29/branching-out-episode-6-april…>,
is out! And in this special episode, *Jose Bolaños* from IUFRO HQ talked
with *Daniela Kleinschmit*, professor of forest and environmental policy at
the University of Freiburg, Germany, and incoming President of IUFRO; *Woodam
Chung*, professor of forest engineering at Oregon State University, U.S.A.,
and incoming IUFRO Vice-President for Divisions; and *Isabelle Claire Dela
Paz*, President of the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA).
One of the highlights of the discussion was the outlook on the upcoming *IUFRO
World Congress <https://iufro2024.com/>* in Stockholm this summer. Our
guests shared their expectations for this global gathering, emphasizing the
importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing. From climate change to
biodiversity loss, they underlined the myriad of challenges facing the
forest research community in the coming years and highlighted innovative
approaches to tackle those.
*Daniela*, who is currently Vice-President for Divisions, stressed the
importance of effectively communicating scientific findings to policymakers
and the public, as well as the role of social innovation.
*Woodam*, Coordinator of IUFRO Division 3 – *Forest operations engineering
and management <https://www.iufro.org/science/divisions/division-3/30000/>*,
introduced Forestry 5.0, which integrates cutting-edge technologies like
artificial intelligence and remote sensing to revolutionize forest
management practices.
*Isabelle *shared strategies for attracting young people, including
mentorship programs and initiatives for youth advocacy integrating
youth-led initiatives into the broader agenda of the forest sector.
As we look towards the future of our forests, it becomes clear that
collaboration, innovation, and youth engagement will be essential in
addressing the complex scenarios ahead.
We are grateful to our guests and listeners of this episode and the whole
season for sharing their insights. Stay tuned for more episodes in our next

Report: Forest Science and Education in Ukraine - Priorities for Action
Dear IUFRO Officeholders and Members,
Ukraine's forest sector is facing unprecedented challenges. War has
impacted both forests and forestry, devastating forest areas and limiting
the country's capacity to respond to associated problems. Additional
pressures are posed by factors such as climate change, forest health
dynamics, wildfires, and a decrease in forest productivity. To discuss the
current challenges and propose solutions, a two-day Forum on Ukraine Forest
Science and Education: Needs and Priorities for Collaboration
<https://iiasa.ac.at/events/nov-2023/forum-on-ukraine-forest-science-and-edu…>
was held in November 2023 at IIASA Headquarters in Laxenburg, Austria and
online.
The forum, jointly hosted by the International Institute for Applied
Systems Analysis (IIASA), the International Union of Forest Research
Organizations (IUFRO), and the National University of Life and
Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (NUBiP) with support from the Austrian
Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Regions, and Water Management
(BML), brought together global experts to explore pathways toward
catalyzing coordinated and impactful international action to address
Ukrainian forest research and education needs and priorities.
Based on the outcomes of the forum, a new report, prepared by IIASA, NUBiP
and IUFRO, was launched at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations (FAO)'s Support for Recovery of Forestry Sector in Ukraine
International Donor and Stakeholders Conference that took place at the
Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague from 26-27 March 2024.
The report provides input on potential actions in the areas of forest
science for strategy, innovation in forest education, and coordination and
collaboration. These are in line with the Forest Support Strategy for
Ukraine prepared by FAO and endorsed by the Ministry of Environmental
Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
