Dear IUFRO 1.05 Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group Members:
Here is a new update with information for our Uneven-aged Silviculture
Research Group. As before, my goal is to send out a similar update several
times each year. Please forward this email to interested persons who might
not be on this mailing list and encourage them to join the list server as
indicated below.
Future Meetings:
Our next 1.05 meeting will be in September 2010 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The conference title is "21st Century forestry: Integrating ecologically
based, uneven-aged silviculture with increased demand for forests." The
conference will run from 23-26 September with a post-conference tour
scheduled from 27-30 September. The conference includes an in-conference
tour and a number of conference themes. Many thanks to Jurij Diaci from
the University of Ljubljana who is leading this effort. A conference
website will be up in early December: http://web.bf.uni-lj.si/go/uafm2010
IUFRO CONGRESS
22-28 August 2010, XXIII IUFRO World Congress, Seoul, Republic of Korea,
"Forests for the Future: Sustaining Society and the Environment" . The
call for papers and posters is now open for the Seoul Congress
(http://www.iufro2010.com/) Our Uneven-aged Silviculture research group
was involved in developing two technical sessions:
"Uneven-aged silviculture in temperate and tropical forests: Towards
paradigm expansion." This session is co-organized with IUFRO 1.02.04 and
will attempt to foster sharing of information on management of uneven-aged
forests in temperate, boreal and tropical forests. We anticipate six
papers divided between temperate, boreal and tropical forests. Abstracts
should be submitted through the IUFRO website or you can contact Kevin
O'Hara or Armin Seydack (leader of IUFRO1.02.04; armins(a)sanparks.org)
"Silviculture and global change: Managing forests for ecosystem resiliency
and carbon storage." This session will address strategies to improve
resiliency/adaptability of forests and carbon storage through
silvicultural design of forest structures. Although this session has a
weaker tie to the objectives of our Research Group, uneven-aged
silviculture nonetheless will play an important role in mitigating global
change scenarios. Again, submit abstracts through the IUFRO website, or
contact me at the address below or session co-organizer Juergen Bauhus
(juergen.bauhus(a)waldbau.uni-freiburg.de)
There are, of course, many other technical sessions on a variety of
themes. The IUFRO2010 website has more details. If you are interested
submitting an abstract for one of these two sessions, or any IUFRO
Congress sessions, you must submit an abstract through the IUFRO website
by 31 December 2009.
Publications:
A group of papers from the 2008 meeting in Shizuoka, Japan have been
posted in the "online first" category for the "Journal of Forest Research"
http://www.springerlink.com/content/109671/
Those should be published soon as a special issue. Congratulations to
Hiromi Mizunaga for coordinating the editorial process for this issue.

Recent Meetings:
Our recent meeting in Shizuoka was a huge success. Congratulations
to Hiromi Mizunaga and the Executive and Science Committees on a very
well-organized meeting. There were over 100 participants and these
included representatives from 20 countries. In the ten conference
sessions, there were 99 presentations and five keynote
presentations. The conference also included very successful pre- and
post-conference tours The meeting also was successful in expanding
our Research Group's inclusion of scientists working on tropical
forests and from developing countries. Once again, everyone involved
in the organization of this conference deserves a lot of credit for
their hard work and the success of the meeting.
A selection of papers from the conference will be reviewed for
publication in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Forest Research
in late 2009.

topics/speakers through 15 January 2009. Please contact me if you
have ideas for sessions that you would like the Research Group to pursue.
Future Meetings
We would like to hold our next meeting in 2010 but are looking for
possible locations and hosts. If you would like to host our next
meeting or make a suggestion on a possible future site, please
contact me. It is not too early to begin planning for a 2010
meeting. Note that the IUFRO Congress will be in August 2010 so we
should not conflict with those dates. All suggestions are welcome!

22-28 August 2010, XXIII IUFRO World Congress,
Seoul, Republic of Korea, "Forests for the
Future: Sustaining Society and the Environment"
Note that a call for congress themes has been issued:
The IUFRO Congress Scientific Committee (CSC)
invites all IUFRO members and officeholders to
submit suggestions for the themes for the 2010 Congress.
In keeping with the forward-looking spirit of the
Congress title, "Forests for the Future:
Sustaining Society and the Environment", we hope
that with your involvement we can develop a set
of approximately 10 themes that will focus the
contributions that forest science is making to
adapt to our changing world and address the
significant environmental, social and economic challenges facing society.
Suggested themes should be concise, informative,
attractive, and hopefully exciting to a broad
audience within and outside of IUFRO, preferably
interdisciplinary and spanning the social and biophysical sciences.
Our Congress themes will be used as the basis for
the development of the scientific program
plenary, sub-plenary, and technical sessions so
we welcome your input into this process to ensure
that the 2010 Congress will serve the broad
interests of the IUFRO community its member
organizations, scientists and students and
enhance our position as the global leader for forest science.
The CSC will consider all suggestions for the
Congress themes received by February 29th, 2008.
These should be sent directly to John Parrotta
(CSC Chair) at: jparrotta(at)fs.fed.us
Future Uneven-aged Silviculture meetings: We
continue to look for opportunities to add to the
geographical diversity in our Research Group and
to involve researchers working on tropical
forests. We would also like to receive
suggestions on, or offers to host, future
meetings. It isn't too early to be planning a meeting for 2009 or 2010.

The Forum Feature of papers from our 2006 meeting
