Subject: Future Activities of IUFRO Research Group 1.05.00 Uneven-aged
Silviculture
Dear IUFRO colleagues,
I am honoured to be sending this e-mail to you as the new co-ordinator
of this well established and dynamic IUFRO Research Group. I am writing
to bring you all up-to-date with our present activities and make sure
that you have as much notice as possible about future meetings.
However, my first task must be to thank Professor Kevin O'Hara for
leading the group with great distinction for ten years up to 2010.
Kevin welcomed me into the group when I attended my first meeting in
Zurich in 2001 and I know that he is respected and liked by the whole of
the Research Group. Fortunately, Kevin has agreed to maintain his
interest in the Group and I will be working closely with him in the
future.
I would also like to introduce the two new deputy co-ordinators of the
Research Group. Firstly, many of you will know Professor Hiromi
Mizunga, who works at the Institute of Silviculture, Shizouka
University, Japan. Hiromi did an excellent job organizing the 6th
Workshop at Shizouka in 2008. The other deputy is Professor Eric Zenner
who is a silviculturist and works at PennState University, Pennsylvania,
USA and (I think) has been to all the meetings of the Group that I have
attended and maybe more!
Our last meeting was in September 2010 and was hosted by Professor Jurij
Diaci in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Jurij is currently working hard on the
Proceedings of the meeting, which will be published in 'Forestry: An
International Journal of Forest Research'
(http://forestry. <http://forestry.oxfordjournals.org/> oxfordjournals.org/)
in late 2011 or early 2012. The
response to the call for papers was excellent and 23 people submitted
extended abstracts for consideration.
Looking ahead, I am pleased to be able to tell you that planning is now
under way for our next meeting in November 2012. This will be hosted by
Lincoln University, Christchurch, New Zealand. I am really grateful to
Dr. Glenn Stewart who will be co-ordinating the meeting and giving the
Group its first opportunity to consider uneven-aged silviculture in the
southern hemisphere. The provisional title of the conference is
"Uneven-aged silviculture: optimizing timber production, ecosystem
services and resilience to climate change". Further details, including
dates, will be available shortly.
We have also been scoping future meetings with the intention of
maintaining a good geographical spread and holding one meeting every two
years. One area where Hiromi, Eric, Kevin and I are aiming to make
progress is in linking with people working in tropical forests. If you
are able to help or have any contacts on this please let one of us know.
My last point is to ask if any members of the Research Group would be
interested working on projects between our main meetings. It occurs to
me that as a group of international scientists working on a subject we
all really believe in, we should be trying to make more impact on the
debate about the methods used to manage forests globally. If you would
be interested in pursuing this further please contact me directly
(gary.kerr(a)forestry.gsi.gov.uk) before the end of June 2011.
I would also advise you to keep up-to-date with activities within IUFRO.
A new strategy has been published for the period 2010-2014 and a new
Executive Director has been appointed. More details about this and the
activities of other Groups within IUFRO can be found on the website.
I am looking forward to working with you and hopefully meeting at future
events.
Best wishes,
Gary

Dear IUFRO 1.05 Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group Members:
Several important updates for you:
The recent conference in Slovenia was a big success. The conference took
place in Ljubljana and included more than 90 participants from 28
countries. It was an excellent meeting with wonderful weather, great
presentations, and was extremely well-organized. Congratulations to Jurij
Diaci and the rest of the organizing committee for their efforts to make
this conference so successful. The post-conference tour viewed many
uneven-aged forests in Slovenia and Croatia and was also a delightful
experience. Congratulations to Andrej Boncina for his work leading this
excellent tour.
More information on the meeting is available at:
http://web.bf.uni-lj.si/go/uafm2010/index.html
Selected papers from the meeting will be published in a special issue of
the international journal Forestry that is due out in 2011.
This is my last email to you as the coordinator of the Uneven-aged
Silviculture Research Group. I'm sure I can speak for the deputy
coordinators, Hubert Hasenhauer, Susan Hummel and Shi Zuomin, that we have
enjoyed working with you and leading this group the past 10 years.
Beginning in January 2011, the group's new officers will be Gary Kerr,
Hiromi Mizunaga, and Eric Zenner. Their contact information is below. I am
confident that with their enthusiasm this research group will continue to
be among the most active in all of IUFRO. But the success of any IUFRO
Research Group is dependent on the work of volunteers to host and organize
meetings and to the participants who make it all worthwhile. Thanks to
all of you for making this Research Group so successful.

Dear IUFRO 1.05 Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group Members:
A couple of important updates for you:
1) The deadlines for our October 2010 meeting in Slovenia have been moved
back to 1 August 2010. This applies to both abstract and registration
deadlines. So you have about 10 days to submit an abstract and register.
The organizing committee promises rapid decisions on submitted abstracts.
More information on the conference is available at:
http://web.bf.uni-lj.si/go/uafm2010/program.html
2) Having served for two terms, 2010 will be the last year that I can
serve as Coordinator of the Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group (IUFRO
1.05). Dr. Hasenhauer will also have completed his two terms as Deputy
Coordinator. Drs Zuomin and Hummel are eligible to serve one more term as
Deputy Coordinators. I think we have all enjoyed serving you and making
this Research Group one of the most active in all of IUFRO.
Our group will soon need new leadership. If you have an interest in
serving in a leadership role in this group, you may either contact me
(kohara(a)berkeley.edu) or our Division Coordinator for 1.00, Bjorn Hanell
(Bjorn.Hanell(a)ssko.slu.se) Dr. Hanell will make all decisions on future
officers. Thank you!

Dear IUFRO 1.05 Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group Members:
Here is a new update with information for our Uneven-aged Silviculture
Research Group. As before, my goal is to send out a similar update several
times each year. Please forward this email to interested persons who might
not be on this mailing list and encourage them to join the list server as
indicated below.
Future Meetings:
Our next 1.05 meeting will be in September 2010 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The conference title is "21st Century forestry: Integrating ecologically

IUFRO CONGRESS
22-28 August 2010, XXIII IUFRO World Congress, Seoul, Republic of Korea,
"Forests for the Future: Sustaining Society and the Environment" . The
call for papers and posters is now open for the Seoul Congress
(http://www.iufro2010.com/) Our Uneven-aged Silviculture research group
was involved in developing two technical sessions:
"Uneven-aged silviculture in temperate and tropical forests: Towards
paradigm expansion." This session is co-organized with IUFRO 1.02.04 and
will attempt to foster sharing of information on management of uneven-aged
forests in temperate, boreal and tropical forests. We anticipate six
papers divided between temperate, boreal and tropical forests. Abstracts
should be submitted through the IUFRO website or you can contact Kevin
O'Hara or Armin Seydack (leader of IUFRO1.02.04; armins(a)sanparks.org)
"Silviculture and global change: Managing forests for ecosystem resiliency
and carbon storage." This session will address strategies to improve
resiliency/adaptability of forests and carbon storage through
silvicultural design of forest structures. Although this session has a
weaker tie to the objectives of our Research Group, uneven-aged
silviculture nonetheless will play an important role in mitigating global
change scenarios. Again, submit abstracts through the IUFRO website, or
contact me at the address below or session co-organizer Juergen Bauhus
(juergen.bauhus(a)waldbau.uni-freiburg.de)
There are, of course, many other technical sessions on a variety of
themes. The IUFRO2010 website has more details. If you are interested
submitting an abstract for one of these two sessions, or any IUFRO
Congress sessions, you must submit an abstract through the IUFRO website
by 31 December 2009.
