<p>In the latest episode of Branching Out: the forest podcast, host Jose Bolaños (IUFRO HQ) welcomed Franka Brüchert and Roger Meder, Co-Coordinators of IUFRO Division 5 Forest Products. The conversation explored the evolving role of forest products in the world’s economy and how wood might define the 21st century.<br /><br />The architect and timber architecture advocate Alex de Rijke is often quoted as saying “the 17th century was the age of stone. The 18th century was the peak of brick. The 19th century was the era of iron. The 20th century was the century of concrete. The 21st century will be the time for timber.” And this reference set the tone for the discussion. Roger elaborated, “Division 5 for me is really the heart of forestry. It’s a very diverse division. We cover everything starting from traditional wood products... to non-wood products as well… But for me, Division 5 is where we make use of our forests.”<br /><br />Franka explained that the Division itself is further divided into 10 research groups, one of the most active being the wood identification group. This group focuses on answering the question: Where does the wood come from? This information is crucial for international trade and marketing.<br /><br />The episode also touched on innovative uses of forest products and highlighted that wood has many advantages over other materials in terms of its machinability, its tactile nature, the ability for it to be moulded into many features, etc. Franka added an example of the Berlin Fashion Show 2024, which had a unique collection created using textile fibres made from beech wood.<br /><br />Challenges remain, including market competition and building regulations. Franka noted that Glulam, for example, took two decades to find its way to the market and called to be patient and persistent to push new ideas through.<br /><br />Looking forward, the All Division 5 Conference in 2027 aims to gather scientists and innovators to share knowledge and explore new forest product applications. As Roger put it, “What strikes me is that we’re seeing interest from regions of the world where traditionally Division 5 hasn’t had a very strong representation, and I find that exciting.” Tune in to <strong>Branching Out: the forest podcast</strong>! Researchers have dubbed this "The Humpty Dumpty Effect". <br /><br />Research shows that forests are being pushed to the brink of collapse, which could send ripple effects across the globe, destabilising societies and economies, and just as the nursery rhyme warns, collapsed systems cannot be 'put back together again'.<br /><br />Launched today on World Environment Day, this report is the first of its kind. Leading scientists convened by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) to explore, for the first time globally, how forests contribute to social and economic resilience in the face of disturbance and change, and how societies can, in turn, support and steward resilient forest systems. Scientists are calling on policymakers to abandon business as usual and recognise that forests are not isolated systems but instead exist as social-ecological systems (SES). <br /><br />In this vein, the world's forests are not immune to global regime shifts. As political polarisation grows, climate change is becoming deprioritised, and markets are shifting in response, and changing the way in which we rely on, manage, and protect our forests. Scientists warn that by failing to uphold forest resilience, we are pushing them beyond the point of recovery.<br /><br /><strong>Dr. Craig Allen, Resilience Scientist and Professor at the School of Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln said:</strong> "It's not just the trees that fall - it's a whole web of relationships between species, soil, water, and people that unravels. Once disrupted, these relationships can't simply be 'replanted'. We need proactive resilience building now, rooted in science, justice and long-term thinking."<br /><br />Indigenous Peoples and local communities have long been championed as the custodians of our forests, often disproportionately impacted by the onset of climate change. Whilst this is true, the report highlights that policymakers underestimate the growing ways in which our world is interconnected. <br /><br /><strong>Dr. Nelson Grima, Coordinator of the Science-Policy Programme at IUFRO said: </strong>"When we destabilise forests, the impacts can be felt across all regions and economies. Forests are everyone's business - not just those living nearby. Every person relies on forests to either regulate their climate, sequester carbon, or to alleviate poverty, ensure food and clean water or to keep economies stable. It's not about proximity."<br /><br />IUFRO's report recommends how policymakers can improve and better understand how forests uphold social and economic resilience in ways that acknowledge the world's interconnectedness. Conference presentations will be held on September 8th and 10th. The in-conference tour (included with the conference registration) will be on September 9th, which will visit a unique community-managed small-scale tree farm, a visit to Snoqualmie Falls, and a conference banquet at Ivar’s Salmon House in downtown Seattle. The conference will be hosted by Washington State University.
Accommodations at the hotel will be available at a special conference rate of $165 USD/night starting the night of September 7th if booked by August 8th, 2025.
An optional post-conference tour, “Small Scale Forestry in Volcano Country,” will be held September 11th – 13th, 2025.

Fact Sheet: California's Wood-Based Bioeconomy

A wood-based bioeconomy uses forest resources to create bioenergy, bioproducts, and other renewable materials. It replaces fossil-based materials with wood-derived alternatives like biofuels, biochemicals, and sustainable wood products, supporting both the economy and the environment. As an above-ground, renewable fuel source, it also has the potential
to offset emissions from below-ground, sequestered fossil fuels.
California has large resources of residual biomass from forestry, agriculture, and waste management, making it a leader in sustainable bio-based product development. According to the California Energy Commission, there are approximately 47 million bone dry tons (BDT) of biomass resource potential in California. Projections indicate continued growth through 2045, driven by forest management, agricultural production, and bioeconomy advancements. These resources could support renewable energy, carbon sequestration, and innovative bio-based industries, positioning California to become a leader in the sustainable bioeconomy if fully realized.

By completing the Remote Sensing course, participants will gain an understanding of:
- Various remote sensing platforms,
- Major satellite systems orbiting the Earth,
- Aerial photo image capture, scale, and interpretation,
- LiDAR technology and how it works,
- Remote sensing-derived products and their applications in forestry.
This course is free of charge and has been approved for SAF Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) credits. Participants who pass the final exam with a score of 70/100 or higher are eligible to receive 3.5 CFE credits. We invite non-specialists, natural resource professionals, extension agents, and forest landowners to explore this opportunity to enhance their geospatial knowledge.

Is it a pest? Is it a native organism? Is it an invasive species? Will it work? Is the suggested management effective? Can it be implemented in the location where it is to be used due to legal or local conditions? Has the pest and host species been correctly identified?
