>From 24 to 27 October 2016, IUFRO will hold its first Regional Congress for Asia and Oceania in Beijing, China. Therefore please submit by 31 January at the latest your session proposals addressing one or more of the following Congress themes:
1. Sustainable forest management for enhanced provision of ecosystem services;
2. Forest and landscape rehabilitation and restoration;
3. Combating desertification, disaster and risk management, and climate change mitigation and adaptation;
4. Planted forests for fostering a greener economy;
5. Innovative technologies for bio-energy, bio-materials and other products;
6. Urban forestry for human health and community well-being;
7. Social and cultural aspects of forests, including traditional knowledge, human health, community participation and gender roles;
8. Forest and agro-forest management for food security, enhanced livelihoods and non-timber forest products.

Dear colleagues,
You may have heard that FAO will host third Asia-Pacific Forestry Week in the Philippines 22-26 February 2016. It will be the largest and most important forestry gathering in the Asia-Pacific region in 2016. Importantly, it will be the first major gathering in the region focused on forestry after the Paris COP. APFW 2016 will be the third Asia-Pacific Forestry Week, following successful events held in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2008 and Beijing, China, in 2011. Each of these events attracted around 1,000 participants and encompassed 40-60 individual workshops, seminars, networking activities and other events.
The overall theme of APFW2016 is Growing Our Future! This theme reflects the need for society to proactively integrate forestry into the wider context of sustainable development. The theme also explicitly suggests that forestry should no longer be seen as a separate extractive renewable sector, but rather encompasses a holistic approach to an integrated and sustainable development paradigm, under which economic, social and environmental objectives are equally addressed. Leading international figures are expected to attend the APFW 2016.
There are various ways you can take part in this event, among others:
- organize a partner event
- organize a booth
- submit a photo contest (http://www.fao.org/about/meetings/asia-pacific-forestry-week/photo-contest/…)
- Submit a poster (http://www.fao.org/about/meetings/asia-pacific-forestry-week/posters/en/)
- Nominate a champion of Asia-Pacific Forests (http://www.fao.org/about/meetings/asia-pacific-forestry-week/champions/en/)
- Be a participant and meet leading forestry leaders
- Be a sponsor
- etc.
Here is the website to the event: http://www.fao.org/about/meetings/asia-pacific-forestry-week/en/
I look forward to seeing and meeting some of you in the Forestry Week.
Best regards,
Yurdi Yasmi

Dear IUFRO Divison 9 colleagues,
I 'd like to use the opportunity of the just started new year to send
you my regards and best wishes for 2016.
You have done a great work for IUFRO and Division 9 in the last year and
there are already many exciting plans for activities for this new year.
I am not able to name all of them (please have a look at the IUFRO
website to grasp the full list of planned activities) but just
exemplify the high grade of activity by naming those sending their call
in the last weeks, e.g. RG 9.05 where all Division 9 groups are invited
to propose sessions for a conference in Bogor/Indonesia in Autumn, WG
9.01.03 (Extension & Knowledge) who sent out a cfp for their next
conference in Ontario in September or the 17th Int. Symposium of RG
9.06. on Legal Aspects of European Forest Sustainable Development that
will be held in Slovakia / Czech Republic in May. I am aware that there
will be many more meetings coordinated, organized and supported by
Division 9 groups. Thanks for all of these efforts - it is great to work
with such an inspiring and motivated team!
There is a challenge we have to meet in this year and this is our
website communication. Though we are pretty good in communicating our
activities, we have been less good in communicating a few more
information about our groups in general. I take the chance and the
spirit of the new year to ask all of you to update the IUFRO website of
your group. This will make your efforts and the groups work visible as
well to the people outside IUFRO and can help to strengthen our network.
You can directly send your changes to Brigitte Burger (burger(a)iufro.org)
from the IUFRO secretariat. She will be happy to change the content.
Let me end my new years email by once more announce the IUFRO 125
Anniversary Congress 2017 to be held in Freiburg from 19-22 September
where we plan to have an All Division 9 meeting as well. You can keep
this in mind when planning further activities in your groups as all of
you are invited to contribute with sessions and other forms of meetings
within that Congress.
I hope to see you in 2016.
With best regards
Daniela Kleinschmit
Coordinator Division 9
