This email concerns the Nordic – Baltic countries
Dear colleagues
The Nordic Network on Forest Policy Sciences is organizing sessions at the NESS conference in Copenhagen 11-13 June 2013 and call for papers and application for stipends (please find details below).
The NESS conference ( Nordic Environmental Social Science Conference 2013 “Welcome to the Anthropocene”) is held every two years and brings together researchers in the social sciences and humanities. As part of the NESS conference with a specific focus on forest policy – Working Group 8 – Forest policy in transition.
The socio-political demands for forests to provide benefits to society are ever-changing, at an ever- increasing speed. The increasing demand for wood supply for material and bioenergy use, the conservation of forests to foster biodiversity and the carbon sequestration function of forest for climate change mitigation are only a few of these partly conflicting demands. On top of this many of the forest areas in Scandinavia are predominantly privately owned. This creates a need for innovative modes of governance that on the one hand support forestry as units of production and income generation for private owners and, on the other hand, motivate these same owners to provide the other material and immaterial services demanded by society.
With this working group, we welcome papers focusing on the changing role of forests in society, the ever-changing patterns of governance aimed to enhance the provisions of services from forests to society, the perceptions and sense-making of forest owners, and the interaction among different stakeholders in the co-production of modern forestry.
Based on these sessions, selected papers will be published in a special issue on forest policy in an international peer-reviewed journal.
The organizing committee of these sessions - Working Group 8 – Forest policy in transition are pleased to announce 10 stipends of € 1 100 each towards travel, accommodation and conference fees at the 2013 NESS conference.
· 5 stipends are available to PhD students; and
· 5 stipends are available to researchers from the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia)
These stipends have been made possible through a grant from the Nordic Forest Research Cooperation Committee (SNS).
In order to submit your abstract (and apply for a stipend), please:
1. Abstracts must conform to the theme of Working Group 8 (see above).
2. Submit an abstract for consideration to Working Group 8 – Forest policy in transition not later than March 15 at the NESS hompage
(https://conventionbureauet.wufoo.com/forms/ness-2013-upload-of-abstracts/)
Mark “Forest policy in transition” in the online application system.
3. If applying for a stipend, email a copy to nornetfopo2013(a)slu.se indicating whether you are a PhD student or a researcher from a Baltic State in both submissions.
4. Abstracts will be reviewed and ranked by the organizing committee against set criteria.
5. Notification of stipend award will take place before the early registration deadline of 2013/04/15.
With best regards
On behalf of the organizers,
Daniela Kleinschmit

Dear colleagues,
I wish all of you a great new year and hope to meet many of you at the one or the other IUFRO activity.
Preparations for the IUFRO World Congress are well under way and I would like to ask you to pay attention to the call for proposal for technical sessions, which is open from January until April 2013. I am convinced that this is an opportunity Division 9 and all of its research groups and working parties should use; raising attention for our part of the forest research area and of course using the chance to strengthen our network. Please find detailed information for proposing sessions at the following link
http://iufro2014.com/scientific-program/session-proposals/
Another request: Division 3 plans to organize a sub-plenary session on Bioenergy. For this session they would like to see amongst others a key note on "Biomass utilization policies and implementation". I would like to ask you to spread this news in your research groups and working parties and propose names for this task to me not later than February3rd 2013. The idea behind is that the key note speaker might as well organize a technical session on the same issue.
Last issue of this email: Still some reports from working parties and research groups about past and future activities are missing. Please send them to me the LATEST JANUARY 31st. Thanks to all of you who have sent the report already: an impressive amount of work has been done!
With best regards
Daniela

Betreff: FW: IUFRO Div 9 seasons greetings; report 2012 and nomination of Division 9 coordination - deadline January 2013
Dear IUFRO colleagues,
The end of 2012 is approaching. This is the right time to thank all of you for your great commitment in IUFRO and in particular in Division 9. This is the second year since Division 9 came into being and we have proven that the different social perspectives of science covered by Division 9 are of highest relevance in forest research and therefore in IUFRO. Many events you have organized and co-organized, not least our first All Division 9 conference in Sarajevo have contributed to tighten the network of and within Division 9 and exchange knowledge and experiences. Thank you for all your efforts!!
However, one task is remaining. I am asking all coordinators and deputy-coordinators of Division 9 research groups and working parties to send me a report about the 2012 activities of the group (organizing/co-organizing events, communication, publishing) in order to allow me and IUFRO as an organization to recognize and communicate all your activities in the best way. Furthermore I would like to ask as well for your plans for the next year. Both parts can be reported in one document. Please send the report and plans document to me not later than January 15, 2013.
Furthermore we need to nominate a potential candidate for Division 9 coordination for the next term (2014- 2019). The coordinator position is the only one in the Division that needs to be elected by the IUFRO council. Nominations are possible until January 31, 2013. All individual members within IUFRO are allowed to nominate. The nominated person needs to accept nomination and a signature of his/her organization is needed as well. Please find details (and the necessary forms) at the following link: http://www.iufro.org/circular-members-nominations-2015-19/.
I wish you all a great season and I am looking forward to meet all of you in another successful year of Division 9 in 2013.
With sincerest regards
Daniela
