International Conference on New Frontiers of Forest Economics, June
26-30, Zurich, Switzerland. We have four guest speakers and
presentations of 6 others papers. All these presentations will be
focused on some emerging areas of forest economics. Conference program
is available on the conference website.
Now, we are opening the registration for whoever is interested in the
conference. You may like to join us. As we have explained earlier in our
announcement of the conference, every participant of the conference has
to take a responsibility of a discussant of at least one paper. Hence,
all participants will be very active participants. The schedule of the
submission of comments by discussants is given on the website. You may
like to read the details of the conference on our website before your
registration.
The registration is open only for 20 people other than the presenters
and organizers. Hence, if you are interested you should register as soon
as possible because the registration will be closed as soon as we reach
the limit of 20.

2) Follow the link on the top of the homepage to the ETH site registration.
3) Register carefully and slowly (registration worked if you get an
email by ETH).
4) Login to your account and print a receipt.
If the paying process doesn't work properly or if you are not sure

only the paying process just once.
If the payment still doesn't work, you will get an email from PayPal

IUFRO and Information: Direction 2012
Information has been central to IUFRO's brief since its foundation in the nineteenth century, and it has maintained a specialist research group dealing with information in various forms for well over a century. Following the latest re-organisation, this role is now held by the new IUFRO group 9.01, Information and Communication, which brings together the traditional library, information networks and terminology activities (formerly 6.03) with communications, public relations, extension and knowledge exchange, along with the long-existing Latin American and Caribbean information systems network.
The All-Division 9 conference in Sarajevo, May 9-11 2012, gives us a great opportunity to explore these newly-unified territories and discover synergies within them that will benefit both IUFRO's internal information exchange and the global forest information network. Each subgroup of 9.01 will offer an individual programme, and this is a call for contributions for the session to be organised by 9.01.01, Library, Information Networks and Terminology, entitled IUFRO and Information: Direction 2012. Objectives for the session are:
1) To involve the widest possible cross-section of those with an interest in forest-related information
2) To explore opportunities for cross-sectoral work between the various sub-sections of 9.01 and across IUFRO generally, to support and enhance information provision is its widest sense
3) To derive from this a timely and relevant agenda for 9.01.01 to take us up to the next World Congress in 2014 and beyond.
So we invite your ideas! In which directions should we be heading in 2012? What are your priorities in managing information today? What solutions have you found, and what support do you need to help establish new systems and services - or to reinforce existing systems much valued but now under threat, perhaps for economic or staffing reasons?
We welcome proposals for conventional papers (15min maximum), and also short contributions (maximum 5 mins) which can be presented in café-style discussion sessions. We recognise that funding to attend conferences is often difficult to come by these days, particularly in the library and information sector, and many who would be interested may be unable to attend. We welcome contributions from you too! and strongly encourage you to send in short pieces which can be discussed by conference participants. This can be in any form you like, e.g. PowerPoint, video (e.g. YouTube), social media (Twitter etc), e-mail etc. We are not looking for sophisticated or time-consuming presentation, but for ideas : suggestions for activities where we as a group of information professionals can make a difference to you, whether you are an information provider or user, or both.
Traditionally, our group has been active in the areas of networking, classification and terminology, and in supporting the Global Forest Information Service (GFIS); and more recently in the developing areas of data management/archiving, mentoring, training & support and evidence-based forestry. Ideas for further development in those areas are welcome, but do not limit yourselves to them:
information is key to every area of human activity so nothing is barred!

Dr. Carlos Bolaños habla sobre las prioridades de trabajo en RELADEFA
Un juez agrario de nuestro país fue electo por dos años como coordinador de América Latina de la Red Latinoamericana de Derecho Forestal y Ambiental (RELADEFA)
La elección del Dr. Carlos Bolaños Céspedes implica un reconocimiento al país por sus esfuerzos para mitigar el cambio climático y a la jurisdicción agraria del Poder Judicial por sus aportes.
La Red Latinoamericana de Derecho Forestal Ambiental (RELADEFA) es una red multidisciplinaria de profesionales y organizaciones dedicada a estudiar el Derecho Forestal e impulsar su aplicación efectiva, ofreciendo y promocionando espacios de debates, proyectos, estudios científicos y doctrinales. Esta Red busca constituirse como un referente que, por su transparencia y capacidad de estudio, incida en los sectores público, privado y académico, nacional e internacional, con el fin de contribuir a las políticas de desarrollo forestal sostenible.
Carlos Bolaños Céspedes, tiene más de 15 años de laborar como juez. A partir de este año sus conocimientos y experiencia se reflejarán en las acciones que tomará la Red , cuyo objetivo principal para los próximos años es ayudar a mitigar los efectos del cambio climático en Centroamérica, una de las regiones que se prevé que será más afectada por este fenómeno.
El especialista cuenta con un doctorado en Derecho Agrario y Ambiental de la Universidad de Costa Rica, además de una especialidad en Administración de Justicia de la Universidad Nacional.
El puesto que ocupara el Dr. Bolaños Céspedes es académico por lo que además deberá cumplir con su función como juez.
¿Cuales serán sus aportes a esta organización?
Durante los próximos dos años, la tarea más importante, es trabajar en política pública, legislación y modificaciones a la institucionalidad para adaptarnos al cambio climático.
Es importante trabajar en normativa jurídica y elaborar políticas públicas para lograr un desarrollo sostenible. Las decisiones que se tomarán tendrán un papel fundamental en mitigar los efectos del cambio climático y la preservación de la vida.
Otro propósito es especializar grupos de profesionales para la región mesoamericana, amazónica, que asesoren al gobierno y a la sociedad en cómo mitigar el calentamiento global.
¿Son efectivos los esfuerzos que ha hecho Costa Rica para mitigar el cambio climático?
Costa Rica siempre ha sido pionero y sus aportes son reconocidos en América Latina, pero es necesario pasar de la teoría y de los discursos, a ejecutar acciones inmediatas.
Para que nuestro país logre ser un país carbono neutral como lo ha propuesto el gobierno, es necesario diseñar nuevas políticas para la agricultura, que permita estar preparados para la escasez de productos, ya que los efectos del cambio climático dificultarán la producción.
Nuestro país debe enfocarse en los aspectos que más contaminan, que es la necesidad de utilizar combustibles fósiles en el transporte público, y tomar acciones contra los químicos que se utilizan en la agricultura.
Cada país debe adoptar medidas para que el calentamiento global no afecte a los más pobres, por ejemplo, para la zona del pacífico (Guanacaste) deben preocuparse por el tema de incendios forestales, el aumento de temperatura que generará pérdidas en la biodiversidad, es por eso que es indispensable que tanto en esa región como en toda la franja pacífica de Centroamérica se haga un rediseño de las áreas de conservación.

first of all let me take the opportunity to send you my best wishes for the new year and to thank you all for your engagement and activities.
Division 9 has been very active in the last year and many events are already planned for the next. We do have the chance to send information about the last years activities to the Annual report of IUFRPO by the end of this month. We should take this chance to inform the IUFRO network about our progress and results. For this reason I would like to ask you to send information to my email about events, results and plans of your reserach groups and working parties until January 23rd. Pictures are highly welcome.
I will gather information, conclude it to a comprehensive Division 9 summary for the annual report.

The Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford, is offering a Wood
Professorship of Forest Science
The Wood Professorship of Forest Science is a newly established post at the
Department of Plant Sciences and its purpose is to develop a research
initiative that will generate the fundamental science necessary to underpin
evidence-based forest policy developments. This professorship provides an
exciting opportunity for an individual with outstanding academic
achievements and vision to develop a world-class research programme at the
University of Oxford. The department enjoys an internationally leading
position in research and teaching in plant sciences, with research groups
focusing on biochemistry and systems biology, cell and developmental
biology, ecology, evolution and systematics. The Professor will provide
academic leadership in Forest Science in the Department of Plant Sciences
and throughout the University. He/she is expected to contribute to promoting
the 'Trees for Tomorrow' initiative within the Plants for the 21st Century
(P21C) Institute.

This is a call for papers for the session "Policymakers and the Public: Communicating Science in a Changing World" to be held as part of the IUFRO All Division 9 Conference in Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina, May 9-11, 2012.
The purpose of this session is to improve understanding of communications of forest science in relation to policy. Questions to be answered are: How is scientific information on forests communicated to policy-makers? What does communication between forest policy decision-makers and forest scientists look like? How is scientific information on forests communicated to the public in relation to forest policy? Is there a role for forest scientists in shaping public opinion on forests as they communicate scientific information? Topics include communications theory related to science policy, particularly comparative examinations; practical applications of theory; effectiveness of communication approaches particularly in relation to those of climate change, biodiversity, ecosystem goods and services, and others topics currently of special interest to policymakers; case studies, including those related to communications with local and traditional communities and the public, use of social media, and other innovative practices; and other related topics. A moderated discussion of best practices will wrap up the session.
