Notification: Call for nominations of fellows for the second global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services
Dear IPBES members, observers and other interested stakeholders,
The IPBES Plenary, in decision IPBES-11/1, approved the undertaking of a second global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
The overall objective of the second IPBES global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services (referred to hereafter as “the second global assessment”) is to assess relevant knowledge that has become available since the publication in 2019 of The Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services and to assess progress towards achieving the goals of sustainability and living in harmony with nature. The second global assessment will strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people on a range of spatial scales, from the local to the global, by providing the knowledge and the policy support tools needed for informed decision-making. The second global assessment will be delivered in 2028.
Further to the call of nominations of experts for a second global assessment (EM/2025/04<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>, Governments and other relevant stakeholders are herewith invited to nominate candidates to participate in the IPBES fellowship programme for the second global assessment.
The IPBES fellowship programme, which is part of a larger capacity-building portfolio of activities, targets early-career individuals1 who wish to gain experience by participating in the work of IPBES. Selected fellows will participate in the preparation of the chapter of the assessment for which they are selected, and their contribution will be acknowledged as part of the citation for that chapter. Fellows will attend author meetings and receive training to gain an in-depth understanding of the IPBES assessment processes and the science-policy interface. Fellows will also be paired up with a mentor for the assessment period.
The assessment will be conducted in line with the procedures for IPBES deliverables set out in decision IPBES-3/3, annex I (available here<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>) and based on the scoping report for the assessment (available here<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>).
IPBES is seeking fellows who have experience in regional and global analyses relating to nature and nature’s contributions to people in terrestrial, inland water, coastal and marine ecosystems. They should have expertise relevant to the global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services in one or more disciplines within natural science, social science or humanities. IPBES is, in particular, seeking fellows with an interdisciplinary background. IPBES is also looking for fellows on Indigenous and local knowledge.
Governments and relevant stakeholders are invited to include in their nominations candidates with diverse backgrounds and expertise, and ensure gender balance in their nominations.
All nominated candidates (nominees) need to be available to attend the relevant author meetings, training workshops and induction day for fellows, with the induction day and first author meeting tentatively scheduled for end of November 2025.
All Governments and relevant organizations or institutions are encouraged to submit nominations; nominating organizations or institutions are not required to have been admitted to the Plenary of IPBES as an observer. Please help us to disseminate this call for nominations of fellows widely.
Please follow the below procedure for nomination:
* Sharing the call of nomination: All Governments and relevant organizations or institutions are invited to disseminate this call.
* Completing the application form (candidates): Interested candidates are invited to complete the application form and attach their curriculum vitae through the dedicated web portal at https://www.ipbes.net/second-global-assessment/fellows-application<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…> (to access this page you will need to log in with your IPBES website log in credentials. Nominees not yet registered on the IPBES website will need to do so at https://ipbes.net/user/register<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>). Please note that the nomination form is in English only and applications should be submitted in English, as the assessment process will be conducted in English;
* Approval and formal nomination (Governments/organizations): The nominating Government or organization (nominator) indicated by the nominee will receive an email with a link to the nomination form and will be invited to approve and submit the nominations in the web portal;
* After nomination: Nominators and nominees will receive confirmation via email once the nomination has been submitted by the nominator.
Interested early-career individuals wishing to be nominated by a Government are encouraged to contact their IPBES National Focal Point (https://www.ipbes.net/national-focal-points<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>) regarding any country specific processes or deadlines and are requested to fill out their application form by 28 March 2025.
Nominators (Governments or organizations) should submit the nominations of all nominees, which they would like to support, before 6 April 2025. Early nominations ahead of this deadline are encouraged. Fellows will be selected by the management committee of the second global assessment, which includes the co-chairs of the assessment and members of the IPBES Bureau and Multidisciplinary Expert Panel.

An online dialogue meeting will be organized to facilitate and strengthen engagement by Governments and stakeholders in the nomination of experts and fellows. The meeting will provide information regarding the required relevant expertise of nominees and the nomination process, and will also provide an opportunity for current and previous IPBES experts and fellows to share their experiences. The dialogue meeting is scheduled for 12 March 2025, 1 p.m. CET. More information will follow shortly.

FW: Last chance for Precision Forestry Symposium, 5-7 February, 2025

Dear Colleagues in Precision Forestry
This is more or less a final reminder for registration for the upcoming Precision Forestry Symposium, to be held here in Stellenbosch ( just outside Cape Town), South Africa, 5-7 February, 2025.
We have a very interesting programme lined up, starting with a PhD workshop, a day of commercial workshops, and three days of presentations in the beautiful Winelands of the western Cape. Keynote speakers include Div 3 co-coordinator, Prof. Ola Lindroos, a Precision Forestry expert from a large industrial plantation owner, Ms Miranda Wilson, and the Director of School for Data Science and Computational learning here at Stellenbosch University, Prof. Kanshu Rajaratnam.
Commercial workshops will include sessions with amongst others, Remsoft, Microforest, Softree (RoadEng) and Timbeter.

Most of the people on the list of officers for Division 4 for 2024-2029 were approved by the IUFRO Board at the May meeting. Some officers were named after that meeting, and some Working Party names were modified. These changes will become official with Board approval later this month.

IUFRO WP 4.05 member Prof. Dr. Lidija Zadnik Stirn honored with the EURO Distinguished Service Award

We are delighted to announce at the 2024 International Conference of the Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO), Prof. Dr. Lidija Zadnik Stirn received the EURO Distinguished Service Award (EDSA) for lifetime achievement in the European operations research community and profession. The EURO Distinguished Service Award (EDSA) is the highest recognition in EURO of distinguished service to the European operational research community and to the profession of operational research. We are also pleased to say that, as only one EDSA award is given each year, this is a very special occasion.
Prof. Zadnik Stirn has been an honorable member of IUFRO since 1986. She has held several coordinator and deputy positions, including D4 deputy coordinator and WG 4.05 coordinator. Her work focuses on developing optimization models for forest management, environmental decision models, assessment of forest ecosystem services and managerial economics. She has published more than 630 works, 45 of which are scientific articles!
We would like to send our heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Zadnik Stirn on receiving this well-deserved award!
** Recent Work from Division 4

Technical session at the IUFRO WC 2024:
Our working groups arranged a technical session, T5.8 “Developments in complex remote sensing-assisted forest surveys to support monitoring and assessment of forest ecosystems,” which included three poster sessions and two oral sessions. Altogether, there were more than 40 participants.
There is a special issue arranged in connection to the session in the Silva Fennica journal: https://www.silvafennica.fi/page/special
Manuscript submission opened on July 1 and will close on December 31.
