Dear colleagues,
Due to the current health situation we, the IUFRO Task Force on Monitoring
Global Tree Mortality Patterns and Trends, had to cancel our first workshop
on Harmonizing terrestrial data sources on forest condition that was
supposed to be held in Wuerzburg, Germany, at the end of March. We have
acted upon the corona restrictions and have substituted the 'physical'
workshop with two online surveys, which will be followed by a series of
virtual working group meetings.
Surveys and workshops aim to identify existing terrestrial and remote
sensing data sources on forest condition and how the data can be harmonized
to infer information on tree mortality rates and trends over time. We now
seek your help to assemble information on existing data sources that allow
deriving global tree mortality rates. The links below will take you to the
surveys, specifically designed to be as brief as possible. The surveys seek
to assemble metadata on existing data sources in order to:
· develop methods for quantification of tree mortality rates
consistently across different protocols, and
· link ground and satellite-based information to understand how tree
mortality changes over time.

Betreff: Workshop announcement
Dear colleagues and friends,
We are happy to announce the "call for abstracts" for our workshop on "Water and nutrient fluxes in ecosystems under a changing climate - a tracer-based perspective". The event will take place from the 4th to the 6th of November 2020 in Heidelberg, Germany.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together leading scientists from hydrology, soil science and plant physiology to communicate the latest research on water and nutrient fluxes in the soil-plant atmosphere continuum and to identify challenges and ways forward among colleagues from these three neighboring disciplines. We will have four sessions covering the following topics:
1. Transport processes and residence times in ecohydrological systems
2. Novel tracer techniques for investigating processes in the subsurface
3. Ecohydrological storages and fluxes mediated by plants
4. Methodological developments and monitoring systems
Confirmed invited speakers are: Dr. Matthias Sprenger, Dr. Matthias Beyer, Jun. Prof. Dr. Michaela Dippold and Ass. Prof. Dr. Giulia Zuecco
For abstract submission please follow the link:
We look forward to a lively and engaging workshop.
Best wishes,
Natalie Orlowski, Michael Rinderer, Maren Dubbert and Jaane Krüger

Dear Colleagues
The IUFRO units 4.04.04 and 3.04.00 as well as Division 3.00.00 and
4.00.00 are sponsoring the 2021 Symposium on Systems Analysis in Forest
Resources (SSAFR) which will be held in Estes Park, Colorado, USA,
August 8-11, 2021 (https://sites.warnercnr.colostate.edu/ssafr2021/
<https://sites.warnercnr.colostate.edu/ssafr2021/registration/>). This
will be the 19th symposium in a series starting 1975 that has long
provided a) a venue for presentation of state-of-the-art applications of
operations research and systems analysis in forest resources management
planning and policy analysis, and b) opportunities for a fertile
exchange of ideas among forest researchers, students and practitioners.
Topics to be addressed at this symposium include, but are not limited to:
· Forest management and planning
· Forest transportation and supply chain optimization
· Wildfire management and decision support
· Forest health, invasive species and wildlife habitat management
· Data science, statistics and machine learning in forestry
· Spatial optimization
· Stochastic process, simulation and optimization
· Quantitative analysis in forest and wildfire economics and social science
· Watershed management
The conference website is now open for abstract submission
(https://sites.warnercnr.colostate.edu/ssafr2021/registration/) Please
make your abstract concise (< 300 words). The deadline for abstract
submission is January 31, 2021, but earlier submission is definitely
appreciated.
We are looking forward to your abstract and to meeting you at the Symposium!
On behalf of the symposium scientific committee,
Jose Borges
