Special Issue "Non-Wood Forest Products Management: Inventory, Planning, Governance, Marketing and Trade"
Dear Colleagues,
The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO Units 4.04.04-Sustainable Forest Management Scheduling and 5.11.00-Non-Wood Forest Products and the IUFRO Task Force on Unlocking the Bioeconomy and Non-Timber Forest Products) as well as the 19th Symposium on Systems Analysis in Forest Resources (SSAFR 2021) are sponsoring this Special Issue of Forests (http://www.mdpi.com/journal/forests)
We welcome the submission of manuscripts for publication in this Forests special issue (SI). There are a myriad of opportunities to unlock the full potential of NWFPs, such as creating new knowledge and tools to optimize the sustainable provision and profitability of NWFPs, fostering the development of market conditions for NWFPs, and developing economic and governance strategies for the better management of wild forest products-particularly in low-income countries. Thus, this SI aims at contributing to the dissemination of research endeavors involving the development of models, methods, processes, and decision support tools to address the inventory, planning, harvesting, governance, certification, marketing, and trade of NWFPs. This will be influential to strengthen the NWFP knowledge base and of research strategies to support the full encapsulation of NWFPs in the framework of the sustainable management of forest ecosystems. Papers submitted for publication in this Special Issue will undergo a rigorous peer review process with the aim of prompt and wide dissemination of research results and applications.

_Tree mortality in Australian ecosystems: past, present and future_
_Abstract_: Australia is not only the driest inhabited continent, it
also experiences high interannual variability in rainfall, and severe
multi-year droughts. Tree death from drought is thus a recurring feature
of the Australian landscape. In this talk I will review our current
understanding of drought mortality in Australian ecosystems, including
the historical context, current field research on the extent and
mechanisms of drought dieback and recovery, and the development of
models to predict future drought mortality risk.
_Belinda is Distinguished Professor at the University of Western
Sydney_. Her research focuses on how plants, especially forests, respond
to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate change. She works
at the interface between experiments and models: her aim is to develop
evidence-based models of how ecosystem productivity, water use and
species composition will be affected by global change, and to do so she
works closely with a number of experimental teams world-wide to test and
improve ecosystem models.

Hello from IUFRO Division 4!
This latest issue of the newsletter continues to report on recent and planned activities in Division 4, the accomplishments of our members, and introduces more of our officers. Remember that we can only report the information you provide, so please continue to send Kristy (kristyak(a)utk.edu<mailto:kristyak@utk.edu>) information, photos, scholarship and job opportunities, and links related to Division 4.
There are a few updates regarding division-wide efforts. First, I will be sending out a poll in very soon to schedule a meeting of all division officers in late February or early March to discuss a number of topics such as communications within the division, portions of the IUFRO Strategic Action Plan that we might want to emphasize, and future meetings. I will send out a report on that meeting to everyone, as well as include it in the next newsletter.
One of the topics we will discuss is the possibility of a Division-wide meeting in 2022 or 2023. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, one possibility is the Regional IUFRO Conference in Moscow planned for September 2022, but we will discuss other alternatives as well. Please contact me or any officer if you have thoughts on other options.
Finally, we continue to explore ways in which we can include opportunities for virtual participation in IUFRO conferences and meetings in the future. Although immunizations are not occurring as quickly as I had hoped, we are seeing some positive momentum, and in-person meetings will be feasible at some point in the future. Still, I believe that including virtual options will increase participation and allow many more scientists to become involved in IUFRO activities. While providing such options will require support from IUFRO headquarters, we will continue to explore ways in which we can accomplish this at the division level.

The IUFRO Working Party 4.02.01 Resource Data in the Tropics has been redirected towards the issue of rescuing legacy or historical tropical forest datasets that are still on paper or in older digital formats. They also want to help develop appropriate metadata standards and policy for equitable use of these data.
These legacy datasets are invaluable for understanding how tropical forests, biodiversity, and carbon storage change through time, including the cumulative impacts of changes in land use and climate. Historical data can also help instruct current and future forest management.
All are welcome to participate who are interested in this effort. Please contact tropfordata(at)gmail.com for more information.

_Belinda is Distinguished Professor at the University of Western
Sydney_. Her research focuses on how plants, especially forests, respond
to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate change. She works
at the interface between experiments and models: her aim is to develop
evidence-based models of how ecosystem productivity, water use and
species composition will be affected by global change, and to do so she
works closely with a number of experimental teams world-wide to test and
improve ecosystem models.

the International Tree Mortality Network, an initiative of the IUFRO
task force on monitoring trends and patterns in global tree mortality,
is presenting the second lecture of the online seminar series.

*Dr Flávia Costa, *Brazilian National Institute for Amazonian Research
(INPA)
*Tree mortality in the Amazon across local hydrological gradients: how
water table depth may save or condemn trees as climate changes*
_Abstract_: Dr Costa will present results of 20 years of investigation
on patterns of forest response to soil hydrology (more specifically
water table depth) during normal and extreme climatic years to examine
the hypothesis that shallow water tables buffer forests from droughts
and forests in these conditions may even be benefited by droughts. Dr
Costa will also present some data on the hydraulic trait distributions
along hydrological gradients to analyse the shifting implications to
mortality during moderate to strong droughts.

_Dr Flávia Costa, Researcher @ Brazilian National Institute for
Amazonian Research (INPA)_
Dr Flávia Costa is plant ecologist studying forest dynamics,
anthropogenic impacts, functional and historical ecology of the Amazon
for the last 25 years, based at the Brazilian National Institute for
Amazonian Research (INPA, Manaus). Dr Costa's current research focuses
on the effects of local hydrology on the structure, composition,
dynamics and function of the species and forests facing climate change.
Dr Costa also runs the long-term ecological site of Reserva Ducke in the
central Amazon.
