Full Report with Case Studies Published by WWF-Germany, November 2020 Author: Stephanie Mansourian, environmental consultant and Deputy Coordinator of the IUFRO Task Force on Transforming Forest Landscapes for Future Climates and Human Well-Being WWF and IUFRO have come together to push the forest restoration agenda forward using our combined scientific, policy and field implementation expertise. Both of our organizations have been exploring lessons learned in FLR (IUFRO FLR Snapshot and WWF FLR Field Experiences) to understand what works and what doesn't as a basis for informing future implementation. The purpose of this report is to identify the enabling factors at the national or subnational scale (including specifically governance and economic factors) that have motivated the initiation of forest restoration, that have enabled its implementation at scale, and that are key to sustaining it. It reviews case studies of 10 locations that have scaled up forest restoration (Bhutan, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Georgia, Kenya, Madagascar, Viet Nam, the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel, and Brazil's Espírito Santo State) in order to identify possible enabling factors related to governance and economics and thereby to guide future FLR interventions. Call for Submissions: Managing for Wood Quality: Analytics, Operational Tools and Applied Solutions; Forests Special Issue.

Dear Colleagues, Global competition and societal change are eliciting incremental changes in forest management practices throughout temperate and boreal forest regions. Forest management objectives and associated silvicultural inputs are increasingly focused on enhancing end-product quality while providing a wider array of ecosystem services and maintaining or increasing volumetric fibre yields. Realizing this aspirational trivariate goal is partially dependent of the provision of enhanced in-forest operational intelligence and associated decision-making capacities in relation to the production and management of wood quality outcomes. Innovative research efforts continue to make consequential gains in addressing these issues via the development of wood quality and fibre attribute prediction models, in-forest non-destructive methods for estimating end-product potential, and crop planning decision-support systems and associated software analogues for use in operational forest management. The journal Forests (mdpi), is embarking on an effort to document and advance these innovations throughout the forest science and management communities. Specifically, the upcoming Special Issue, entitled "Managing for Wood Quality: Analytics, Operational Tools and Applied Solutions", will attempt to benchmark the state-of-knowledge and highlight research efforts in this rapidly evolving area. Contributions that aim to (1) quantify or model conceptual or empirical linkages between external tree morphology (e.g., crown structure) or internal fibre attributes (e.g., wood density, microfibial angle or modulus of elasticity) and end-product potential, (2) advance in-forest non-destructive methodologies for use in estimating internal wood quality attributes (e.g., acoustics), or (3) develop and (or) demonstrate crop planning decision-support analogues for use in managing wood quality outcomes (e.g., density management models), would all be within the scope of this Special Issue. Furthermore, contributions that attempt to incorporate the consequences of climate change on wood quality determinates or management decision-making would be most welcomed. If applicable, please consider contributing to this effort and note contributions should be submitted by March 31st, 2021. This is our second issue of the Division 4 newsletter and, as you will see, we have more information than in the inaugural issue. Thanks to everyone who provided material, and please keep sending Kristy (kristyak(a)utk.edu<mailto:kristyak@utk.edu>) information, photos, scholarships and job opportunities, and links related to Division 4. This is a great opportunity to keep our members, as well as all of IUFRO, informed of our activities and accomplishments. I want to bring your attention to a few matters that we will address in the coming months. Bianca Eskelson (Division 4 Deputy Coordinator) and I participated in the virtual IUFRO Enlarged Board meeting in September, during which these issues were raised. We then discussed these further with the Division 4 Research Group leaders in October. First, we are continuing to discuss ways in which we can include opportunities for virtual participation in IUFRO conferences and meetings in the future. Obviously, the pandemic has necessitated the move to virtual meetings, but including such opportunities in the future is likely to increase participation and allow many more scientists to become involved in IUFRO activities. I participated in the virtual 4.05.00 conference hosted by EURAC and the University of Padova earlier this month (more information below) and it was a great success. You will read more about this in the future, but please share any ideas you have about how we can best achieve this. The second matter concerns plans for a Division-wide meeting in 2022. One possibility is the Regional IUFRO Conference in Moscow, which has been postponed until September 2022 due to the pandemic. Several divisions have expressed interest in holding their meetings as part of this conference, although plans are tentative at the moment. You will hear more about this next year as we work through alternatives. The final issue concerns the IUFRO Strategy and Strategic Action Plan for 2020-2024. Academic mentoring has proved helpful to many young researchers, and mentoring programmes have been launched at many universities. This book is written in a highly accessible style while restricting each chapter to the most essential information so that reading can be accommodated by a busy schedule. It is not limited to any particular university or geographic region, since the author has worked in a number of different countries and encountered many different academic cultures. The first chapter of the book offers an introduction to academic mentoring and provides an overview of what academic mentoring entails. In the following chapters, important topics are discussed that may come up in mentoring conversations. These include scientific thinking, doctoral studies, behaviour and disappointments, scientific storytelling, teaching, scientific presentations, early career years, research cooperation, job applications and basic data management. The discussions in each of these chapters were designed with a view to provide food for thought and to invite self-reflection as well as continued discussions with peers and mentors. WP4.02.01: Resource Data in the Tropics WP4.02.01 has a new coordination team since January 2020 (Coordinator: Sheila Ward, Deputy Coordinator: Hans Juergen Boehner, Wan Rasidah Kadir, and Jenny Wong). We are reorienting this working party for the purposes of discovery, curation, and use of legacy tropical forest datasets. We are focusing on hardcopy datasets and older digital formats that are in danger of being lost. These legacy datasets are invaluable for understanding how tropical forests change through time, including the cumulative impacts of land use and climate, and changes in patterns of biodiversity. The first step was to review datasets referred to in older meta databases (ATROFI-UK and TROPIS) to determine if they are still available and if they are in need of updated electronic curation. We have also reached out via electronic media and networks to find additional legacy tropical datasets. The next steps will be to develop an updated metadatabase regarding these datasets, develop policy on ownership and appropriate use with stakeholders, seek funding, and electronically curate such datasets.
