Comprehending population diversity and its inherent dynamics is the keystone to conservation, domestication and effective utilization of tree genetic resources.
The conference will primarily focus on the population dynamics of forest tree genetic resources in the context of countering ecological and climatic challenges.

We are excited to propose the establishment of a new IUFRO Task Force: "A Permanent International Network of Forest Living Labs for the Sustainable Climate Adaptation of Forest and Agroforestry Socio-Ecosystems." Your IUFRO unit, 2.04.00 Genetics, might find this task force of interest.
Task Force Overview
The proposed Task Force aims to create a global network of forestry living labs, fostering long-term collaborations between diverse sectors and strengthening partnerships between science and society. Please find attached the draft concept note.
These forest living labs will:

Serve as platforms for testing and refining adaptation strategies in real forest environments
*
Involve local communities, practitioners, and government agencies
*
Support knowledge transfer and accelerate the implementation of adaptation techniques
*
Provide practical recommendations for policymakers
Mission and Objectives
Our mission includes:

Consolidating the concept of forest living labs within the scientific community
2.
Developing a methodological research framework
3.
Establishing a pilot international network of 8-10 living labs across five continents
The ultimate goal is to enhance global collaboration, share resources, and develop innovative solutions for climate change challenges in forest and agroforestry systems.

We are currently forming a coordination group of 10 members, with 9 individuals already confirmed. Additionally, we are developing a consortium to include all interested individuals and stakeholders.

We invite you to submit "Resilience of Forest Biodiversity to Climate Change and Pests: Civic Engagement and Conservation in Seed Banks, Public Gardens, and Wild, Urban, and Agroforestry Landscapes". This session is organized by members of the Society of American Foresters, Kew Gardens, Morton Arboretum, and the US Forest Service, and one of eight linked to the International Society of Tropical Foresters. The deadline for abstract submissions is 2 June 2023 (3 weeks from today). The session proposal is included below.
NOTE: Presently, we cannot offer funding for travel and registration; we are exploring options and appreciate any leads you may have.
Session description
To conserve biodiversity, multiple approaches can be taken on the ground. This mini-symposium (Panel, Flash-talks & Posters) represents experts who focus on complementary aspects of conservation and reforestation; threat assessment, seed collecting and banking from wild trees, collective action and civic engagement, the roles of public gardens in conserving genetic resources, developing genetic resistance to pests to conserve biodiversity, and the importance of conserving genetic diversity in the face of pests and climate change.
Seed is the unit by which biodiversity is propagated, and therefore, protected. There is ever increasing pollination disruption with shifting local climate conditions and more fragmented and degraded native ecosystems. As forests and genetic diversity are lost, so are mother trees for seed collection, in a time when people want to greatly scale reforestation efforts. In addition to potential declines in seed crops, global trade, biodiversity loss, and fragmentation increase the threat of emergent insect and pathogen outbreaks, resulting in local or range-wide extinction of iconic tree species. Therefore, there is a global need for threat assessments, seed collection and banking of native tree species.
In the context of the above challenges and solutions, public gardens and arboreta are critical to the resilience of forests and society. In addition to acting as living collections, seed sources, and refugia of tree species, public gardens serve as biodiversity hotspots in cities, and meeting places for public and volunteer conservation efforts and outreach. As sentinels, trees in public gardens can be used to proactively detect emergent disease threats. Through collective action, exchange of information, public engagement, and local expert knowledge, "think global, act local" could be applied to aid proactive efforts to protect forest biodiversity from the next major pests across the world. Local experts and civic ecologists can accomplish this by collecting seed and observing trees in native environments, plantations, public gardens, and urban forests. Breeding or human-directed genetic improvement presents a practical solution for restoration of species that are impacted by emergent pest epidemics, climate change, or other threats. The utility of breeding to protect biodiversity also depends on the prior establishments of seed banks and other germplasm resources. It is critical to generate a prior understanding of the diversity of populations of tree species valued for their ecological, horticultural, or economic and commercial characteristics, the observed or potential effects of threats to those populations, and the role diversity could play in recovery of species.

as a warm-up to next year’s 2024 IUFRO Congress, I’d like to launch a sort of « contest » (but nothing to win, alas!) to collect ideas we could share / debate as a side event at the congress (format to be decided) and / or become the backbone of a position / opinion paper.
The concept is the following: I’d like to know what would be, in your opinion, the most exciting research topic(s) for forest genetics in what remains of the XXI Century.
What are the breakthroughs we need to make forest genetics really progress?
What are the unanswered questions that still haunt / motivate us?
What methods, technologies, concepts would we need to incorporate in our research field to answer such questions?
What other questions, besides those listed above, should be answered?

SESSION SUMMARY: Tropical timber species of the Meliaceae (including
Cedrela, Entandrophragma, Khaya, Swietenia, and Toona) are among the
world’s finest woods, and many species have other uses. Their sustainable
management faces similar issues around the world. This session will share
the latest in research and applications for a global perspective on these
species. Topics could cover conservation of genetic resources, genetic
improvement, advances in shoot borer control, natural forest management,
and development and products useful for human health, among others.
*SESSION C1c: **Improving high-value Meliaceae yields in plantations*

SESSION SUMMARY: This session will focus on better production of Meliaceae
species grown in plantations. Many species (e.g. mahogany, African
mahogany, Australian red cedar, Melia) have recently been grown as
plantations around the world and research is needed over a wide range of
topics. The main objectives are to share experiences and to find common
research themes to build possible collaborations among researchers working
with Meliaceae species in plantations around the world.
*SESSION C9a: Discovery, curation, and uses of legacy tropical forest data
sets*

SESSION SUMMARY: Legacy tropical forest datasets have been generated by
various projects over time, and many are in danger of being lost. These
datasets are valuable for understanding how tropical forests change through
time, and many of the forests they characterize no longer exist. To
safeguard these data, standardized metadata and electronic archiving
schemes need to be developed. The purpose of the session is to share
information on the potential uses of such datasets, their current status,
and appropriate curation and metadata strategies.
*SESSION F6b: Effective educational strategies for the next generation of
forest professionals *

SESSION SUMMARY: University-based programs on forest related fields are
evolving and inherently need to change towards multidisciplinary programs.
Some major drivers of these changes are globalization of the economy,
climate change, and new technologies and informatics. In a similar vein,
solutions for real life, resource management problems around forest key
issues, like health, bioenergy, climate change are consistently calling for
more holistic and cross-sectoral approaches. Universities curricula need to
meet diverse higher demands, and new ways to approach these challenges
involving various disciplines in a multicultural environment. This session
will highlight findings on research aiming to understand those challenges
and also research that addresses innovative strategies that allow forestry
students and professors and providers of non-formal education to keep
abreast with the time, such online classes, field practices, case studies
among others.
