Invitation for special issue on biodiversity and management for high value timbers

Dear all: Submissions are invited for a special issue of the International Journal of Biodiversity Science, Ecosystem Services & Management, entitled Synergies between biodiversity and management for high-value timber species. This issue is based on a technical session at IUFRO 2014, but the issue is open to authors who did not participate in the session. The deadline has been extended to April 15, 2015. This Special Issue examines the scientific basis for managing to create a positive synergy between biodiversity and high-value timber species. Management to conserve biodiversity and management for the production of high-value timber species can be in conflict with each other. The increasing need to conserve biodiversity and the ongoing demand for high-value timbers prompt the goal to integrate these management objectives. Therefore papers are requested for a Special Issue that explores positive interactions between biodiversity and high-value timbers. This Special Issue aims for a global scope, including tropical and temperate high-value timbers. Conversely, biodiversity may contribute to the health of individual trees and populations of high-value species. We aim for a global scope, including tropical and temperate high-value timbers. Presentations might address: biodiversity and protection of high-value species from pests and pathogens, the role of plantations in biodiversity conservation, biodiversity for plantation health, enrichment planting with high value species to maintain biodiversity via intact forest instead of land use change, high-value species and the maintenance of intact forests, use of high value species for habitat rehabilitation and restoration of biodiversity, or high-value plantations as a means to reestablish biodiversity, among other topics. How might more land area devoted to high-value timber in natural forest as well as plantations may help maintain biodiversity and associated ecosystem services? Glenn Stewart has done a fantastic job putting together this conference, which is the first venture into the southern hemishpere for the Research Group. There is also a post conference tour between 17-23 November 2012. However, the maximum number of people that can be accommodated on the post conference tour is 30 and there are now only a few places left. Dear IUFRO members, The Final Conference of PARAmount a project funded by the Alpine Space Programme of the European Union will be held on 23rd April 2012 at Grenoble in parallel with the 12th Congress of INTERPRAEVENT (Grenoble, 23 26 April 2012). The Final Conference is designed to bring together experts, researchers, policy and decision makers, practitioners from various disciplines as well as concerned stakeholders for an interdisciplinary, transnational exchange of views on the further development of strategies and technologies for the management of natural hazards threatening transport infrastructure and to present the results of the project concerning the Assessment of the vulnerability of transport infrastructure to natural hazards Improvement of the efficiency of measures necessary to protect transport infrastructure against natural hazards and to increase its reliability and security Advancement of Decision analysis and support systems for an effective management of transport infrastructure threatened by natural risks Development of new concepts and approaches for assessing and monitoring natural risks. I am writing to bring you all up-to-date with our present activities and make sure that you have as much notice as possible about future meetings. However, my first task must be to thank Professor Kevin O'Hara for leading the group with great distinction for ten years up to 2010. Kevin welcomed me into the group when I attended my first meeting in Zurich in 2001 and I know that he is respected and liked by the whole of the Research Group. Fortunately, Kevin has agreed to maintain his interest in the Group and I will be working closely with him in the future. I would also like to introduce the two new deputy co-ordinators of the Research Group. Firstly, many of you will know Professor Hiromi Mizunga, who works at the Institute of Silviculture, Shizouka University, Japan. Hiromi did an excellent job organizing the 6th Workshop at Shizouka in 2008. The other deputy is Professor Eric Zenner who is a silviculturist and works at PennState University, Pennsylvania, USA and (I think) has been to all the meetings of the Group that I have attended and maybe more! Our last meeting was in September 2010 and was hosted by Professor Jurij Diaci in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Jurij is currently working hard on the Proceedings of the meeting, which will be published in 'Forestry: An International Journal of Forest Research' (http://forestry. <http://forestry.oxfordjournals.org/> oxfordjournals.org/) in late 2011 or early 2012. The response to the call for papers was excellent and 23 people submitted extended abstracts for consideration. Looking ahead, I am pleased to be able to tell you that planning is now under way for our next meeting in November 2012. This will be hosted by Lincoln University, Christchurch, New Zealand. I am really grateful to Dr. Glenn Stewart who will be co-ordinating the meeting and giving the Group its first opportunity to consider uneven-aged silviculture in the southern hemisphere. The provisional title of the conference is "Uneven-aged silviculture: optimizing timber production, ecosystem services and resilience to climate change". Further details, including dates, will be available shortly. We have also been scoping future meetings with the intention of maintaining a good geographical spread and holding one meeting every two years. One area where Hiromi, Eric, Kevin and I are aiming to make progress is in linking with people working in tropical forests. If you are able to help or have any contacts on this please let one of us know. My last point is to ask if any members of the Research Group would be interested working on projects between our main meetings. It occurs to me that as a group of international scientists working on a subject we all really believe in, we should be trying to make more impact on the debate about the methods used to manage forests globally. Uneven-aged Silviculture update

Dear IUFRO 1.05 Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group Members: Several important updates for you: The recent conference in Slovenia was a big success. The conference took place in Ljubljana and included more than 90 participants from 28 countries. It was an excellent meeting with wonderful weather, great presentations, and was extremely well-organized. Congratulations to Jurij Diaci and the rest of the organizing committee for their efforts to make this conference so successful. The post-conference tour viewed many uneven-aged forests in Slovenia and Croatia and was also a delightful experience. Congratulations to Andrej Boncina for his work leading this excellent tour. The primary purpose of this email is to update you on our meeting in Slovenia this September and remind you of several rapidly approaching deadlines. FUTURE MEETINGS: Our next 1.05 meeting will be in September 2010 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The conference title is "21st Century forestry: Integrating ecologically based, uneven-aged silviculture with increased demand for forests." The conference will run from 23-26 September with a post-conference tour scheduled from 27-30 September. The conference includes an in-conference tour and a number of conference themes. Dear IUFRO 1.05 Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group Members: Here is a new update with information for our Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group. As before, my goal is to send out a similar update several times each year. Future Meetings: Our next 1.05 meeting will be in September 2010 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The conference title is "21st Century forestry: Integrating ecologically based, uneven-aged silviculture with increased demand for forests." The conference will run from 23-26 September with a post-conference tour scheduled from 27-30 September. The conference includes an in-conference tour and a number of conference themes. Many thanks to Jurij Diaci from the University of Ljubljana who is leading this effort. Dear IUFRO 1.05 Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group Members: This is another update with information for our Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group. As before, my goal is to send out a similar update several times each year. Recent Meetings: Our recent meeting in Shizuoka was a huge success. Congratulations to Hiromi Mizunaga and the Executive and Science Committees on a very well-organized meeting. There were over 100 participants and these included representatives from 20 countries. In the ten conference sessions, there were 99 presentations and five keynote presentations. The conference also included very successful pre- and post-conference tours The meeting also was successful in expanding our Research Group's inclusion of scientists working on tropical forests and from developing countries. Once again, everyone involved in the organization of this conference deserves a lot of credit for their hard work and the success of the meeting. A selection of papers from the conference will be reviewed for publication in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Forest Research in late 2009. Dear IUFRO 1.05 Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group Members: The primary objective behind this email is to remind you that the deadline for abstract submission to our upcoming meeting in Shizuoka, Japan is 31 May 2008, or in just few weeks! The conference theme is Feasibility of Silviculture for Complex Stand Structures: Designing Stand Structures for Sustainability and Multiple Objectives. Early registration is through 31 July, 2008. Note that these dates have changes slightly since my last email. Conference theme: Feasibility of Silvliculture for Complex Stand Structures: Designing Stand Structures for Sustainability and Multiple Objectives. The meeting will focus on the feasibility of managing for complex forest structures. Dr. Hiromi Mizunaga is leading the effort to host this meeting (contact email: mizunaga(a)agr.shizuoka.ac.jp) Both preconference and postconference tours are tentatively planned as well as an in-conference tour day. The timing of the meeting is intended to coincide with some of the best weather around Mt. Fuji. This will be our Research Group's first meeting outside Europe or North America. Abstract submission will begin this spring and close by 31 May 2008. Registration begins in February. In keeping with the forward-looking spirit of the Congress title, "Forests for the Future: Sustaining Society and the Environment", we hope that with your involvement we can develop a set of approximately 10 themes that will focus the contributions that forest science is making to adapt to our changing world and address the significant environmental, social and economic challenges facing society. Suggested themes should be concise, informative, attractive, and hopefully exciting to a broad audience within and outside of IUFRO, preferably interdisciplinary and spanning the social and biophysical sciences. Our Congress themes will be used as the basis for the development of the scientific program plenary, sub-plenary, and technical sessions so we welcome your input into this process to ensure that the 2010 Congress will serve the broad interests of the IUFRO community its member organizations, scientists and students and enhance our position as the global leader for forest science. The CSC will consider all suggestions for the Congress themes received by February 29th, 2008. These should be sent directly to John Parrotta (CSC Chair) at: jparrotta(at)fs.fed.us Future Uneven-aged Silviculture meetings: We continue to look for opportunities to add to the geographical diversity in our Research Group and to involve researchers working on tropical forests. We would also like to receive suggestions on, or offers to host, future meetings. It isn't too early to be planning a meeting for 2009 or 2010. Publications: The Forum Feature of papers from our 2006 meeting in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec have been published in the September 2007 issue of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research (volume 37, issue 9).
