Dear IUFRO 2.09.02 Members,

As you know, the 6th IUFRO 2.09.02 conference entitled “The might of vegetative propagation for healthy and productive forests to face climate change” was hosted by Scion in Rotorua, New Zealand during March 03-08, 2024. We would like to warmly thank again Dr. Jana Krajňáková, Dr. Henri Baillères and their Scion teams for having organised a great conference with around 75 participants from 16 countries, which produced 74 communications in 4 sessions (11 keynotes, 29 oral presentations, and 34 posters). As usual, open access to the Book of abstracts and Conference Proceedings is expected to be available via IUFRO channels later this year, by Sept. 30, 2024.

After more than 5 years since the last conference in Coimbra, it was very exciting to be back at our international 2.09.02 conference! And we are very pleased to announce that Prof. Hailong Shen (Northeast Forestry University) accepted again to organise the next 7th IUFRO 2.09.02 conference in Harbin, China (2026). The covid19 pandemic prevented our conference from being held in China in 2020. Congratulations and thanks to Prof. Hailong Shen for his continued commitment!

The conference in Rotorua was also the opportunity during the IUFRO 2.09.02 Business Meeting (March 5, 2024) to consider appointing new Coordinator and Deputy Coordinators for the period starting July 1st, 2024, just after the world IUFRO Congress in Stockholm, Sweden (June 23-29, 2024). Indeed, the current 2.09.02 coordination team has been appointed by IUFRO on January 1st, 2015 (Coordinator J.-F. Trontin, France) and January 1st 2017 (Deputy Coordinators Paloma Moncaleán, Spain and Yong-Wook Kim, Republic of Korea). IUFRO recommends that officers should not serve more than two 5-year terms in the same position.

Considering that Deputy Coordinator Yong-Wook Kim has retired, and to ensure a smooth transition, J.-F. Trontin announced that he would therefore step down as Coordinator for Paloma Moncaleán by July 1st, 2024. As J.-F. Trontin intends to fully withdraw from the Coordination team, it was also proposed that at least 2 new Deputy Coordinators would be appointed. Volunteers were asked during the Business Meeting to formerly contact the coordination team by Email. Three colleagues already expressed their willingness to serve as Deputy Coordinator but we would like now to extend this call to the whole IUFRO 2.09.02 membership.

à If interested to serve as IUFRO 2.09.02 Deputy Coordinator, please send us an Email by April 30, 2024.

There are no specific requirements to be a Deputy Coordinator of the IUFRO 2.09.02 WP except to be active in the research field of vegetative propagation of trees, highly motivated and, above all, fully devoted to help federate our scientific community worldwide. Deputy Coordinators are supporting the Coordinator for developing and managing the 2.09.02 network (currently over 700 members in the directory since inception in 2008 by Yill-Sung Park), to disseminate useful information via its mailing list and website (events, positions, publications, reports, etc.), to co-organise and lead specific 2.09.02 activities (conferences, workshops or any other networking activity), to promote and/or participate in IUFRO initiatives and objectives, to attend annual meetings organized by Division 2 Coordinator and report to IUFRO upon request (e.g. annual report to Division 2, report on IUFRO meeting). When necessary, the Coordination team may also contribute to secure funding of 2.09.02 activities (fundraising, international sponsorship …).*

Please, visit this page to learn more about IUFRO and its activities, and the various possibilities of getting involved in IUFRO.

Depending on the number of volunteers, and considering gender and geographical balances, we will form a new IUFRO 2.09.02 Coordination team to be submitted by June 2024 to IUFRO Division 2 Coordinator (Dr. Santiago C. González-Martínez) and IUFRO Headquarters for approval and formal appointment.

With best wishes,

Paloma Moncaleán & Jean-François Trontin
