First Ever IUFRO World Congress in Latin America Places Focus on Cooperation for Sustainable Development

29 September to 5 October 2019 more than 2500 researchers and experts representing civil society, women's groups, indigenous peoples, youth, private sector, international organizations, NGOs and governments met in Curitiba, Brazil, to share and discuss latest findings in all fields related to forests and trees. More

 

 

Program Highlights

Over the course of the five-day high-quality scientific program participants benefited from 350 scientific sessions - including five plenary and 20 sub-plenary sessions - with 1648 oral presentations, and 964 posters addressing a great diversity of forest and tree-related topics within the scope of five main themes. More

 

 

Interacting with Stakeholders

The IUFRO 2019 Congress offered many program elements to promote interaction between the diverse groups of participants in addition to the technical sessions. Among other things, a "Forest Science for Future" pledge was drafted for participants to sign. More

 

 

Students

The large participation of students was a special feature of this Congress and contributed considerably to its success. Several scientific sessions addressed education issues, and there were various opportunities for students to participate in mentoring activities. More

 

IUFRO-SPDC

IUFRO's Special Programme for Development of Capacities (IUFRO-SPDC) supported the participation of over 100 early and mid-career scientists from economically disadvantaged countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Read about the pre-Congress trainings, a new FLR book in Spanish and the Restoration Snapshot event. More

 

 

Launch of GFEP Video

The Congress also offered the perfect setting for presenting a video about the work of the Global Forest Expert Panels (GFEP), an Initiative of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) led by IUFRO. Watch this short video and get to know an excellent mechanism for interconnecting science and policy. More

 

New Opportunity for Early-Career Scientists

During the IUFRO World Congress in Curitiba, Brazil, the YSI 2020 was launched by the Coordinator, Daniel Boehnke of IUFRO Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. An opportunity for young scientists from Africa, Asia and Latin America to conduct collaborative research in Europe (and vice versa) during 2020 is now available. More

At the Curitiba Congress, a number of scientists received important IUFRO Awards for outstanding research and valuable services: IUFRO World Congress Host Scientific Award Winners, IUFRO Scientific Achievement Awards (SAA), Outstanding Doctoral Research Award (ODRA), Student Award for Excellence in Forest Science (ISA), Best Poster Award (BPA), IUFRO Distinguished Service Award (DSA), Honorary Membership. More

 

 

Wangari Maathai "Forest Champions" Award

Burundian forestry activist Leonidas Nzigiyimpa was awarded the 2019 Wangari Maathai 'Forest Champions' Award in recognition of his passionate commitment and outstanding contribution to improving forests and the lives of indigenous peoples, women and youth in his country. More

 

 

New IUFRO President John Parrotta

As of October 6, the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) has a new President. Dr. John Parrotta, National Research Program Leader for International Science Issues with the U.S. Forest Service, has assumed office for the term until the 2024 IUFRO World Congress in Stockholm, Sweden. More

 

 

 

 

Contract with IUFRO Executive Director Alexander Buck Renewed

Alexander Buck will continue to serve as IUFRO's Executive Director for another five years. The IUFRO Board unanimously approved an extension of his contract until December 2024. More

 

 

 

 

IUFRO Divisions and Task Forces 2019-2024

First Africa-China International Workshop on Forestland Governance, Investments and Sustainability

The first Africa-China workshop on "Forestland Governance, Investments and Sustainability" held in Yaoundé, Cameroon from 3 to 5 September 2019 brought together some 120 participants from China and 11 African, North American and European countries. More
