Senior Scientist, Forest Entomology - Scion
The Scion Forest Protection team is currently looking for a Senior Forest Entomologist. This exciting role will undertake fundamental and applied research
to protect New Zealand plantation forests from entomological threats both now and into the future.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop and lead research programmes that focus on the biology and ecology of forest insects and strategies
for mitigating the impact of current and potential future pests.
Key responsibilities:

Lead innovative research via laboratory and field trials related to either general forest entomology or more specifically forest
insect risk assessment, insect functional ecology, surveillance, or long-term pest management.
·
Develop new and original research programmes and ideas with the Research Leader and Forest Protection team.
·
Demonstrate science impact by disseminating research findings through scientific publications and presentations at national
and international events.
·
Generate collaboration within and across the research sub-portfolio project teams towards successful deliverables.
·
Depending on the skills and experience of the candidate there is the potential to lead and manage staff in an area of research
speciality.
·
Create a team culture of high-performance excellence and be a role model of the Scion values.
An ideal candidate will bring:
·
A PhD in entomology or invertebrate biology with more than 10 years proven experience in planted or natural forest systems,
biodiversity, community ecology, or forest biosecurity.
·
International experience and networks in the relevant research areas.
·
Proven leadership and experience in the design of high quality science programmes.
·
A proven track record in publishing high quality science publications.
·
A great communicator that is skilled talking to groups and individuals, including conference presentations, external stakeholders
and industry as well as Science Leaders, Research Leaders, General Managers and team members.

Uses rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult problems with effective solutions; probes all sources for answers; can see
hidden problems; provides honest analysis; looks beyond the obvious and doesn't stop at the first answers.
·
Knows personal strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and limits; seeks feedback; gains insights from mistakes; is open to criticism;
isn't defensive; and is receptive to talking about shortcomings.
·
Expert knowledge of NZ's science system and experience in working with the commercial forestry sector and biosecurity system
and their end-users and clients is desirable.
·
Confidence in experimental design, as well as analysis and visualisation of data for publication using R, SAS or similar is
preferable.
