What you'll be doing

Are you excited by the opportunities presented by a science group in the area of Ecological Pest Management? Keen to bring your science leadership skills into a team that delivers national crop protection and sustainability capability for temperate fruit crops including both apples and summerfruit?

Your strong leadership skills will be advantageous to developing a highly collaborative team environment and to provide scientific guidance and mentoring a small team of research staff. Your expertise, technical input and science leadership will be valuable working across a range of projects focusing on pome fruits and other temperate fruit crops.

Using your strong communication skills you will work collaboratively and share research findings with other project members, industry and conference attendees and prepare client and internal reports and where appropriate publish manuscripts in high quality scientific journals.

What you'll need

  • A PhD in entomology, plant horticultural sciences, or related area
  • Proven experience in fruit crop entomology, pest management, biological control and an understanding of disease management
  • Ability to develop and submit funding applications and lead a science programme, conduct independent research, supervise science and technical staff and manage research projects, as well as working outside of normal working hours or off-site if required.
  • Experience in presenting and reporting results to clients and with them collaboratively develop and deliver on future research opportunities
  • Ability to identify opportunities to take research concepts and develop them into end-user ready tools
  • Build and maintain positive collaborations with other researchers including other science disciplines e.g. plant pathology and plant physiology
  • An ability to collaborate with others together with a growth mind-set and openness to develop new skills if needed
  • A track record of successful research, peer-reviewed publications and implementation of research fostered by proven industry relationships
  • A full drivers licence, and ability to travel within NZ. The position involves travels to field sites, industry meetings and other PFR sites.
