Subject: Vacancy at Scion, Rotorua New Zealand - Senior Forest Pathologist

Senior Forest Pathologist

Crown Research Institute Scion is committed to enhancing the environmental and economic transformation of New Zealand, working toward a more sustainable, bio-based future. With more than 60 years of heritage in forestry science, Scion today demonstrates national leadership, world-class innovation and excellence in research and development.

Our Forest Protection Team within the New Forests & Forest Science Group encompasses a range of disciplines. Areas of research include forest pathology and entomology, weed and pest management and biocontrol, fire and wind research, and associated activities.

We are seeking a Senior Forest Pathologist to carry out a programme of research that will result in reduced economic impacts of forest diseases in New Zealand. The research also includes understanding plant – pathogen interaction, disease development, the identification and early detection of pathogens not established in New Zealand. Some time will also be spent providing support to the forest pathology diagnostic service provided by the Forest Protection Team. Research will be primarily focussed on diseases of Pinus radiata. This is a senior role and the successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing development of our research programme.

Our ideal candidate will have a PhD or equivalent degree coupled with at least 7 - 10 years research experience in plant/forest pathology, with an understanding of molecular identification techniques. This is a full time permanent role.

Scion is proud to offer talented and motivated individuals the unique opportunity to pursue a fulfilling professional career. With its head office based on the edge of Rotorua’s world-famous Whakarewarewa Forest, Scion also offers an enviable working environment with excellent work/life balance initiatives. Rotorua is one of New Zealand's leading tourist destinations because of its outstanding natural environment and proximity to coastal beaches and inland lakes, native forests, geothermal areas and volcanic ski-fields.
