IUFRO Unit 1.01.04 Forest Establishment & Early Growth Dynamics (Division 1.00.00-Silviculture) FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT Reinvigorating planted forest establishment research, Rotorua, New Zealand, March 2025. Hold the date! The first international conference of IUFRO Unit 1.01.04 Forest Establishment & Early Growth Dynamics (formerly called Forest Vegetation Management) was held on July 11-13, 2017 in Corvallis, Oregon, USA. The title of the conference was Forest Regeneration in Changing Environments and the goal of the conference was to bring together leading forest researchers and practitioners to share their latest research on managing forest regeneration and early stand dynamics in changing environments around the globe. With one conference missed due the COVID19 pandemic, much time has passed since the last conference... and it's time to reconnect! Since then, there has been a global shift towards planting billions of trees at scale to address issues of climate change and environmental degradation and to accelerate progress on opportunities to increase productivity in planted forests through technology and mechanisation. This combination of change (increased afforestation and adoption of new technologies) means establishment of planted forests is once again a highly topical area of forest science! We're planning a conference for our working group, in Rotorua, New Zealand, in early 2025 to once again bring together all those interested in planted forest establishment and early growth dynamics. The IUFRO Ecology and silviculture of pine Unit and Centro PINUS - a Portuguese NGO focused on maritime pine - invite foresters and researchers from all over the world to join us. This international webinar series will be a journey to discover the general outlook, analyze challenges, and compare main trends and success factors in pine silviculture. Save the date! Our virtual journey starts in Central Europe on March 10, and it is specifically dedicated to Scots pine (Pinus silvestris). The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) is the co-promoter of this Webinar, which aims to provide a compact overview of Scots pine management in Central Europe. Emphasis will be placed on timber production and NWFP; The provision of diverse ecosystem services; The vulnerability of Scots pine as to climate change; and Forest conversion for resilience - mixed forest management. Update regarding: Forests - Special Issue on Silviculture and Management of Boreal Forests

Dear Colleagues, The boreal forest encircles the northern portions of the earth and represents about 30% of the global forest area. This region has a short growing season with 6 to 8 months of below-freezing temperatures and a low diversity of tree species. However, it is an important source of lumber and wood fibre and provides many ecological and social services. Boreal forests also play important roles in climate regulation and are an important reservoir of carbon. Global climate change is having major impacts and, in addition to forestry, the mining and energy sectors are active in this region. About two-thirds of the world’s boreal forests are managed. Management intensity varies from extensive management in Canada and Russia to intensive management in Fennoscandia. Harvesting has increased the number of successional or second-growth forests in many areas, with associated changes in structural characteristics and biodiversity. Challenges to management of boreal forests include: slow growth rates, an abundance of poor soil conditions including imperfectly or poorly drained sites as well as rapidly drained sites and cold soils, wetting up of sites following harvest, remoteness, and high costs. A range of silvicultural practices, including draining, mechanical site preparation, prescribed burning, planting, thinning, and cleaning, are applied. Both even-aged and uneven-aged systems are applied, with stand and site characteristics and other factors influencing the choice of system. A special issue of Forests entitled "Silviculture and Management of Boreal Forests" is in preparation. The aim of this special issue is to document recent advances in silviculture and management of boreal forests with particular emphasis on managing boreal forests for a broad range of services and adaptation to climate change. We invite original research and review papers covering a range of topics relating to the silviculture and management of boreal forests that demonstrate and compare short-term and long-term outcomes of practices in relation to their impacts on tree growth, stand dynamics, yield, biodiversity, economics, resilience, and other values. Mountain forest session at EGU 2020 (3.-8. May)

Dear colleagues, Abstract submissions are now open for the session mountain forests under climate change (BG3.23) at the EGU General Assembly, 2020, in Vienna (Austria) from 3 to 8 May 2020. We hope to gain a broad overview on global mountain forest ecosystems in the context of protection against natural hazards. Potential topics might include the monitoring and modelling of changing disturbance regimes or other expected (climate-induced) environmental changes, as well as human land use and societal requirements that potentially have a direct or indirect impact on the protective effects of mountain forests. 18th International Boreal Forest Research Association Conference: Our Boreal Our Future: The Science, Policy and Practice of Addressing Change

The 18th international conference of the International Boreal Forest Research Association (IBFRA) is being hosted by the USDA Forest Service and the University of Maine in Bangor, Maine, USA. Invited keynote speakers, scientific sessions (oral and poster) and panel discussions will explore new scientific findings and their linkages with policy relating to the addressing change in boreal forests. Designed to engage and inform scientists, resource managers and policy makers, the conference themes will address the current and emerging challenges for the boreal, the role of science in addressing those challenges and the links between science, policy and practice. Topics will include advances in research and policy relating to important regional and global issues around balancing resource use in the boreal with habitat and biodiversity objectives, strategies for mitigation of and adaptation to risks relating to a changing climate and changes in disturbance regimes, and socio-economic changes and impacts. Emphasis will be placed on the use of science to inform management practices and public policy in the boreal. The abstract submission site will open on October 1, 2016, and authors will have until January 22, 2017 to submit papers. The meeting will focus on “Climate-induced range shifts in boreal pest distribution and their ecological, economic and social consequences”, a topic of concern across the circumboreal forest domain. The meeting will include field visits to insect-affected forests, as well as forest operations designed to recover affected trees. It will also feature prominent keynote speakers and venues located in close proximity to the majestic St-Laurence River. The meeting organisation is being led by Louis De Grandpré, of the Canadian Forest Service, and co-sponsored by the International Boreal Forest Research Association (WWW.IBFRA.ORG).
