Objet : ALTERFOR Side Event Oct 1, 12:00-13:50 - XXV IUFRO World Congress

During the congress we will host a Side Event titled “Adapting Europe’s forests to global challenges: Lessons from ALTERFOR”, on October 1st from 12:00-13:50 at Venue R8 – wing 2. ALTERFOR is a large Horizon 2020 project (see https://alterfor-project.eu/), exploring the following overarching question: What alternative forest management models will enable to provide the desired ecosystem services under changing climate and societal conditions over the coming century? At the Side Event we will summarize and discuss the results from 10 landscapes spread all over Europe.

We noticed that you moderate session “D8r: Forest Biodiversity in the framework of global change and the role of Landscape” and would like to invite you to the event. Your session clearly relates to the topics of ALTERFOR and the presence of you and presenters from your session would be valuable for an insightful discussion.

Part 1 - Insights from ALTERFOR case studies

-        Overview of H2020 project ALTERFOR

-        Case Study Examples:

o   Italy: “People everywhere”

o   Sweden: “Intensifying the intensive”

o   Lithuania: “Breaking the code”

-        Summing up: Policy implications

Part 2 - Science across scales and disciplines to handle the complexity of socio-ecological systems

-        From stand to landscape to continent: Ecosystem service trade-offs

-        Linking scientific truth with power: knowledge transfer in ALTERFOR

-        Summarising  discussion
