Bioeconomy as a Common Context for Forests: IUFRO Task Force at UNFF21
|
IUFRO's Task Force T50, "Building an Integrated Vision of the Forest-Based Sector within a Bioeconomy,” was represented at the twenty-first session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF21) in New York, 11–15 May 2026, by Herrick Fox (UC Berkeley).
The bioeconomy thread at the session ran through the Country and Organization-Led Initiative on Sustainable Forest-based Bioeconomy Approaches (COLI), led by Austria with Australia, Finland, Japan, Türkiye, FAO and IUFRO. At its side event, "Vienna Call for Action: The Power of Forest-Based Bioeconomy," IUFRO launched its expanded Policy Brief, Advancing Forest-Based Bioeconomy Approaches. The initiative's science-led think-tank work is to be led by IUFRO through its bioeconomy Task Force, which places T50 close to the question the session kept circling.

IUFRO Forest Carbon "3S" TF Webinar: Biomass and Carbon Substitution
|
On June 2nd, 2026, the IUFRO Task Force-Interaction and Synergy of Carbon "3S" (Sink, Storage and Substitution) in Forest Value Chains (Forest Carbon "3S") convened its second international webinar of the year, themed "Biomass and Carbon Substitution”. The event brought together 70+ leading researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from multiple continents to examine the climate change mitigation potential of wood-based products and rigorous methodologies for quantifying carbon impacts in the built environment. The webinar was co-hosted by the Carbon Footprints journal and IUFRO WP 5.12.01 – Life Cycle Analysis of Forest Products, underscoring the growing interdisciplinary attention to biomass substitution as a forest carbon solution.
