The Pan-European pilot of the Regional Science-Policy Information Networks (SPIN) of IUFRO's Science-Policy Programme has produced two rapid science-policy outputs addressing key issues within Europe's forest-based sector. These outputs are developed through the agile Swift Action Mechanism (SAM) process and provide timely expert input to ongoing policy discussions by mobilising interdisciplinary scientific expertise on short notice.
The first output, "Strengthening Science-Policy Interface for Informed Forest Governance" highlights the importance of fast and concise scientific input, co-creation between researchers from different disciplines and policymakers, strategic communication, and maintaining a multifunctional view of forests in policy processes. The full text is available here.
The second output, "Towards a sustainable, competitive, and science-based bioeconomy: Perspectives on the role of forests within a Pan-European bioeconomy", outlines the role of forests in delivering both renewable materials and ecosystem services. It stresses multifunctional forest management, competitive sustainability, and the need for coordinated and evidence-based policy development. The full text is available here.
Together, the two outputs reinforce the role of SPIN Pan-Europe and its Swift Action Mechanism (SAM) in supporting timely, science-based contributions to forest-related policy debates.
