From Tim.Ebata at gov.bc.ca Wed Apr 16 01:04:03 2008 From: Tim.Ebata at gov.bc.ca (Ebata, Tim FOR:EX) Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2008 16:04:03 -0700 Subject: [IUFRO RG 7.03 FORENT] Announcement: New Provincial Entomologist for British Columbia Message-ID: <5F567C3D1AA5FA4CB777E421F3AC0828E40DE6@caravan.idir.bcgov> It is my pleasure to announce that Ms Jennifer Burleigh has won the competition as the Provincial Forest Entomologist with Forest Practices Branch, British Columbia Ministry of Forests and Range. Jennifer will began working with Forest Practices Branch in Victoria, B.C. on April 1, 2008, and will overlap with Peter Hall for some months before his retirement. Jennifer brings a great deal of enthusiasm and knowledge to the position and should instantly make a highly positive contribution to the Branch and Ministry. She is both a Registered Professional Forester and a Registered Professional Biologist. She was initially hired as a co-op student by the Lillooet Forest District in 1994 to carry out forest health activities. She received a Master of Pest Management from Simon Fraser in 1999 and pursued some further research work at Virginia Tech. She has subsequently worked with Phero Tech and with BioForest Technologies on a wide variety of forest health projects throughout western Canada. She has worked on spruce budworm impact assessment or control programs from BC to Saskatchewan, has experience in the use and development of insect pheromone technologies and has extensive experience in bark beetle management. Jennifer has spent the last year working with Research Branch as their Mountain Pine Beetle Research Specialist, where she also contributed to several climate change initiatives. Her knowledge and background will provide a strong basis for an effective and innovative Forest Health program. Please join me in welcoming Jennifer...she will be a valuable resource over the coming years and will bring a great deal of energy and resources to our program. The two research groups, currently comprising more than 50 scientists, students and technicians, form a strong cross-disciplinary environment including research on ecology and evolutionary biology, neurobiology, physiology, molecular biology and genomics, as well as more applied aspects including pest control and conservation biology. Four postgraduate scholarships (deadline for application May 15th or 21st, 2008, depending on position): - Thrips chemical ecology - Evolution of novel pheromones - Pheromone strains, host plant races and speciation - Chemical pollination ecology Three post doc positions (will be filled when suitable candidates are found): - Chemical ecology of bed bugs - Molecular analysis of moth pheromone production - Pheromone identification and biosynthesis The starting date is negotiable but preferably as soon as possible. A funded Ph.D. position is available immediately to work with me, Dan Herms, and other collaborators on a project that will use metabolomic and proteomic approaches coupled with field studies. The project will be a test of a new ecological model that integrates the phenomenon of pathogen-induced systemic resistance with the growth/differentiation balance hypothesis (Bonello et al. 2006) in tripartite systems that include Austrian pine (Pinus nigra), the blight and canker pathogen Diplodia pinea, and two pestiferous insects, the pine engraver (Ips pini) and the European pine sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer). Prospective candidates should have an excellent undergraduate record in the biological, ecological, or agricultural sciences. A master degree in tree pathology, entomology, or chemical ecology is strongly preferred. Interested students should verify their records against our admission requirements (http://plantpath.osu.edu/graduate-programs/prospective-students/graduate-funding-and-faqs) before contacting me directly for information regarding the project. And an update on the 2008 SFIWC Program from Chris Asaro (Program Chairman): We still have a few vacancies for concurrent sessions. As of now we have six session topics (bark beetle control, southern pine beetle, hemlock woolly adelgid, prescribed fire, systemic insecticides, and possibly gypsy moth), which are just enough to have 2 concurrent sessions per each of 3 time slots. A number of folks at last years meeting indicated a desire to see 3 concurrent sessions per timeslot, so I strongly encourage you to submit more ideas and volunteer to moderate a session. As for the graduate student session, we currently have five speakers and would like to at least double that number. Graduate students or professors, please help us fill up this session by contacting Gina Davis ( gina21 at vt.edu) or Kelly Felderhoff (klfelder at ncsu.edu) and providing them with names, affiliations, and presentation titles as soon as possible. Finally, there have been no title submissions to date for the poster session. Once again, please help us put this program together by sending poster titles, names, and affiliations to Carla Dilling (cdillin1 at utk.edu) as soon as possible. With your help, we aim to have a complete program for this years meeting by early June. Thank you. William P.
