Since Russia is such a large country, I think many people would love to know more about forest and ecology in this part of the world In the last meeting in Hanoi, some of us suggested alternatives to translate part of the feed from non-English speaking country to English for easy assessment or have English key word for matter of classification. It can be done manually by the author or the publisher, but it also time consuming for a large database such in Russia and would require considerable coordination. Alternatively, I think it can be done through auto translations such as one offer by Goggle or Yahoo Babelfish. Those service already offer public API so integration to exiting GFIS should no be so difficult. Here is an Russian article from GFIS and a translation by Google. As the GFIS Regional Coordinator already informed the language problem is one of the main barrier for Asian countries to join GFIS network and we should solve that problem somehow. Russian partners maintain a separate web site at www.gfis.ru to which they translate the most important items from Russian into English, but of course people/money are needed for that kind of service. Your proposal sound quite worksable and the GFIS Implementation Group should consider that option. Auto-translation may not work for every language but for important ones such as most of languages in Europe, and major languages in Asia like Chinese, Japanese, India it should work and the list is growing fast.
